S► 'AFOETH, FRIDAY, MAY 21,188
Upper Canada College.
We direct attention to an ably written•
1 tter in another column animadver
i • g pretty severely upon the m,anag
ent of Upper Canada College. W e
ave seen hints pointing'in a sirnil = r
d+rectian at different times, but nev:r
efore has the bull been gripped : o
11 rmly by the horns as by our correspo a'
dent. There. is no doubt, but this s
o to of the institutions in receipt ;f
bile money which requires to be mo ;e
P
e osely looked after. The writer of th s
1 tter is a gentleman of the mo.t
t orough reliability, and what is f
ual.importance he knows of what e
ites. As he states, this College is i• rr cept of a • very Iarge sum of publ c
oney annually, and the public who
contribute to its support should be'p ,,t
it possession of the fullest. inforraatio •
respecting its working and usefulnes
e can not afford in this Province o
s • pport any fancy, but worthless, pit
colleges, mainly for th.e benefit of, .,r
r that; to gratify th.e prurient whims Of
a few cod fish aristocrats who ma
consider that their dear children wi 1
defiled by rubbing . against those f
o her people equally as good and pe.
b = ps better, although less pretentio s
d s toney." It will be remembere
t at this college got slight rubbing u •
d + ring the late session of the Legislator
hen the Educational Grants wer
scuseed. The Minister of Educatio
t. en proposed to expend a considerabl'
sung in the erection of new boardin
houses in connection with .the college
b t the feeling against the scherrie was s
s ang among members that lae wa!
f iced to withdraw his proposition. W
ar somewhat surprised that a wel
meaning man like Mr. Crooks would
attempt to bolster up an institu.tion o
th'is character.. However, be that as i
may, it behoves the members to hat
. thio matter thoroughly ventilated befor
another session passes over. Let ful
re u-rns as to the work which is bein
d ne, and the manner in which th
institution is being conducted, as wel
asF the emoluments of its officials b
1 •d before Parliament and the public
a d then there will be an opportunit
of ascertaining its value, and if, as w
a ticipate, it is . found not to be .wort
t e money it. costs, withold further
p bio aid from it, and distribute it
sh re among the other . more usefu
schools. Some of our Huron member
ve uld do their Country good service by
t ing this matter in hand at the nex I
se sion.

he _Nail is nothing if not enterpris-
ing. It tries hardto keep'up sides with
its big rival and opponent. In som
th age it succeeds, and in others it doe
no . On the whole, however, it does
ve well. A few days ago the Globe
ha a manufacturer whose conscience
w s. sorely troubled ,because the Nation-
al Policy had placed more wealth at
hi disposal than he knows what to do
with, Not to be out -done by its rival,
the hail conjures up an imaginary far-
mer,and makes him speak through its
ediitorial columns in favor of the Nation -
&i Policy, and against the Globe and the
co science -stricken manufacturer. This
is all right so: far, and the enterprise
th, is displayed, although it did not draw
fo th a. very heavy effort, will, no doubt,
be duly appreciated by the .Mail's read-
er especially those of them who read
ev rything thy can find favorable t
th National Policy, and skip over ev y-
th ng on the other side. We do pot
m au to say, or even insinuate, that the
.11f it has any such readers, but if it has,
theiimaginary farmer's utterances will,
no doubt, be swallowed bolus bolus by
th m. This, however, is a matter which
zn inly concerns them, not us. We
w uld not refer to the Mail'$ imaginary
farmer at all,but for the fact that it
tries .to make hini convey a very false
and erroneous impression. For in
stance, this farmer is made to say
Well, then, this man, who is a fax

ou heavy deficiency had rendered ad

fo he does not blame the present Gov
e meat for imposing new burdens, par-
tici arty as the deficits occurredunder

as to protect the home manufacturer,
he prefers the latter as being at once
