°RESTERS' LECTURE.—Itev. G. G.
If Robbie, High Chief Ranger of the
Comedian Order of -Foresters, will
deliver a lecture on Forestry, its benefits,
&el., in the Town Hall, Seaforth on the
evening of Thursday next at 8 o'clock.
The public, and especially those
interested in the order, are cordially
invited to attend.
QUITTED. --In the list of liquor li-
ceises issued by the Commissioners of
Sointh Huron which was publls. d last
week, we inadvertently omitted the fol-
iose -hag in the township of Stephen :
B." Sparr and Wm. Baker, Crediton ;
Wt J. Moffatt and Charles Robinson,
Centralia ; Wm. Holt and Wm. Mc-
Leod, Stephen. At a meeting of the
Coiimissioners,. held at Exeter, on
Tuesday, it was decided to grant 'a,
license to Robert Stanlake, Port'Blake,
township of Hay.
THE TWENTY-FOURTH OF MAY. --A
Da tug of the Seaforth Fire Brigade
w'J ,be held in the Town Hall on Mon -
da evening. As. no other person
ae ms to be making a move with a view
of getting up an entertainment for the
24th of May, the firemen have the
matter under consideration, and if they
receive sufficient encouragement from
those who should encourage such a
movement they will likely take the
matter in hand. It is for the consider-
ation of this that the meeting is to be
held.
1APPOINTMENTS.—The following ap-
po ntments- in connection with the
Methodist Episcopal Church have been
ane de in stations in this'county : God=
arch—Rev. G. A. Francis. =-Seaforth—
C.I. W. Volllick_ Stanley -R. Howey.
Brussels—D. Ecker. Rev. Mr. Ed -
mends, who has been in Seaforth for
the past year, has been appointed. to
Glencoe, and Rev. Mr. Gifford, of
Brussels, has been appointed to Dres-
den The Rev.. Mr. Williamson, for-
na,erly of Seaforth, and who is well and
favorably known to many of our read-
ers, has been appointed to Hamilton for
the fourth time.
3 n.LED IN MicnIoAN.—We have re-
ceived a note from Mr. Geo. Chnrch,
Herriston,. Clare county, Michigan,
stating that a young man named Wm.
Bell met with a fatal accident in a
lu ber camp in that district on the 9th _
mat. He was loading timber when he
w s struck with a ' log and instantly
kil ed. The unfortunate young man be -
lo gs to this county, but what part is
no known. He was about 5 feet 10
in hes high, weighed about 180 pounds,
an was of fair complexion and florid
coalintenance. Mr. Church wishes us to
make these particulars known with the
hope that they may meet the eye of fi
some of the unfortunate man's friends,
to rwhorn he will be very glad to give
ang desired information respecting the
a event. /
HEAvx Loss.—We learn from a
correspondent that Mr. E. Gaunt,
Deputy Reeve of West Wawanosh, has
lost leis splendid , heavy draught breed-
ing mare. She died about two weeks
age of inflammation., and was sick only
a few- hours. She was sired by import-
ed ! "John Bull." She was onlyl four
years old, and was a noted prize ,winner,
never having been beaten in a, show
ring. She was valued at $300. A very
fair representation of this splendid ani-
mal can be seen in Mr, Gannt's view in
the county atlas. Mr. 0 -aunt is noted
for his good stock, and has been very
sugcessful as a breeder, both of horses
and cattle:, but the loss of this fine ani-
mal will be severely felt by him, not so
match on account of the money valve,
but it will be very hard to procure her
•
equal as a breeding mare.
GOOD THING.—Mr. Robert Fulton,
of
to
of
co
ge
th
taa
Fgmonaville, has acquired the right
amiantifaoture and sellin . the county
13uron a patent buggy top, which for
nfort, neatness of appearance and
feral utility, surpasses anything , of.
kind we have seen. It can be- . at
bed to any buggy, and when on looks
as dwell as an ordinary cover. It can
also be removed' when desired with -very
li
fe
t le difficulty: One of its principal
tures is the ease with. which it can
beraised and lowered. This can be 1
done by a sprint; on each side without
leaving the seat, and without maki ng
aur undue noise to frighten a h orse. As
wellas being convenient, this is also a
great source Of security in the event of
a horse becoming restive or u'nrn.anage-
ab e, as the cover can be lowered in an
in ant, making it( as easy to get out of
th vehicle as if ` there was no cover on •
it. We . understand that -Mr. Fulton
has already received orders for quite a 1
nutnber.
tLV CiosI e. In oro r to afford
their clerks and employees due oppor-
teeity for recreation, the merchants
halve, very properly, agreed to close .I
tri it stores at 7 o'clock during the sum -
m r months. We understand that all .
th merchants in town have signed an ;
at, eemeut to this effect, and we hope it
wi I be sacredly kept. All work and no :
play makes Jack a dull 'joy, and by 1
of prding their clerks this' additional a
means for recreation and amusement,
th merchants will be all the more 1
fai hfully served by them, while none
evil lose any custom. It will not do, .
ho`+s ever, to simply close the front doors i
and invite customers around to the
Bach. If this scheme is adopted by any
thi$ arrangement will soon; fall through. E
But, the matter does not) entirely rest t
with the merchants. Customers can t
do a great deal to assist ill carrying out 1
the ,arrangement. If they'will make it
