—A board school teacher . was en-
deavoring to_sisoertain the extent of her
children's Irnowledge of numbers. On
the question being asked, "Would you
rather have three paper bags with two
oranges in each, or two paper bags
with".,three Oranges in each ?" all but
one little fellow expressed themselves
as without preference. The teacher
asked this pupil for his decision, and
he was persistent in liking the three
bags ; his reason for this was, "So I
coulel have more bags to bust 1" ,

—Thisstory is told of twc# welIknown
southern clergymen, one of whom uu-
dertook to rebuke the other for using
tobacco: "Brother G.," he exclaimed,
without stopping to ask any' other ques-
tions, "is it possible that you chew to-
bacco ?" "I must confess that I do,"
the other quietly replied. "Then I
would quit it, sir," the old gentleman
energetically continued ; "it is a ` very
unclerical practice and a very 'Mclean-
ly one. Tobacco!, Why, sir, even a hog
won't chew it." "Farther. Q., do you
Chew tobacco ?" responded the amused
listener. '.I? Nb, sir !" he answered
gruffly, with mach indignation. "Then,
pray, which is the most like the hog,
you or I?" The old doctor's fat sides
shook with laughter as he said : "Well,
I haveebeen fairly caught•this time."
The Commercial Traveller.

How Girls Go To Sleep.
We had wandered out under the
moonlit larches, and we - all tal=ked' and
laughed at nothing, in that silly, happy
way young people have. We : told rid-
dles and sung the old college :songs till
finally sleep, with its bright -colored
. mantleof dreams, called us, and we re-
tired to what we fondly supposed would
be repose. But if you have ever occu-
pied a room with six girls ; you will
know the sleep is not atway to beob-
tained. at once. One `young ;lady was
an hour and a half, by the I clock; in
brushing and braiding her heir, in pdt-
tini; up her crimps, in cleanin6o and pol-
ishing her finger -nails, in dunning a
piece of silk floss between ea h pair of
her thirty-two teeth, in . polis ing each
one with a little stick and so e powder,
in giving 'thele a vigorous bru hiug with
soap and water, in washing er hands
and applying glycerine to thejn, in put-
ting on a Wash good for the cdmplexion,
in reading her Bible, in kiss lug every-
body good -night and in getti .g into her,
hammock, which everybody who bas
ever tried it knows it is a work of time.
Just as we thought we were. almost
asleep she recollected that site had not
takeu her nus. vomica, and 'she argued
a long time with another y tun.g lady
to try to get her to take nuN vomica,
quoting at great . length from Dr.
Pulte and .other eminent liomcepa-
thie, physicians to prove that she and
u everybody needed flux yomict, occasion-
ally.
When, to get peace, the poor girl
swallowed the globules, we drought we
had erued repose, but then another
er
woman remarked iu a cheerful
tone that she was cold and one of the
windows must come down. This occa-
sioned what seemed to the sleepy Tones
an endless controversy, as9 somebody
else was "burning up with theheat,'F and
wanted another opened. This was anal-
ly settled.. Everything was quiet for at
least five minutes, and we : were all at
length giving up to "tired nature's sweet
restorer," when suddenly an awful -sound
was beard. •
