Enrros,—Six : As yon hav ad-_, minted several letters to your col mns lately on the all important subj t of education; I hope you will allow me space to say a .few words on Over -Edu- cation. The term "Over-Edneat on," like over -production, is in some s a misnomer, for no one can be over coated in the, true development o best faculties ,rfor .worthy ends. there is a great deal of school and ledgeeducation that is aimless, di portionate , and cumbersome. are toomany mediocre professional lawyers, doctors, ministers, s teachers, writers; toosfew skilled sans., fa niers, garcl -hers. intell laborers technically dncated fo rions spheres that ar fundament; well ordered society. . Sooiet'y is heavy, with too much top and to tie bottom. Agricult e, the grea dicing interest out of which all professions.and employmeuts .mus is despised.. There is a bad. tend to crowd the cities nd large to and by a jostling co petition to in a mutual pull-dow : and a ra Which everybody gets out of br Our boys and girls dem it the thing to live genteellynd by one's rather than his hands There air together too many college students, drift into college aimlessly, bet they don't know what else to do, bebause their parents don't know - else to have them do. With no ea or definite aims, they float through successive years of school college, and then what ? The lea profession are over -full, they are, i ated beyond any druid .ery of coni business, they cannot hink of so: their hands or their clothes, they unfitted to become producers w prodncti ,n is available, in their way and in everybody ,else's. , An less and disproportionate educa nses edu- his But , col- pro - here e1n;. :hoof arti- gent va- 1 to top- lit- pro Cher live, :ncy. ns, join in ath, ght its, al - who, use and • hat nest Tong and reed ed n- on ling are ere' own iim ion, has cot altogether . more than it ever comes to. There is too much high-school dab- being*. that is not thorough enough for mental gym nastics, nor practical en ugh for the:,utilitarian • necessities of t oso who must graduate into the hard ork' of the common and laborious. Ipur nit which ballast society. The -. great law will assert itself, and all true edd ea - tion must lay its account with it, hat byy the sweat of the brow wemust eat our bread. That is not good educatio Which would spoil a farmer's boy for th a d homestead, or the farmer's girl fo onsekeepi'ng. There is too large crowd of ufifit female school teac ers. There are too many "useless, third- ate lawyers hankering after office ; tod many goodish ministers, unskilful B oc- tors, ignorant apothecaries ; too m : ny scribblers f There are too many -rn at - en, milkmen, fishmon,dry-go ds, oceryme The rush is for the e: si- !est employ eats that can be set up, !without skilled labor, .technical ed .c- ion, or any apprenticeship of pa ent ndustry, on borrowed capital, wit a 'bankrupt law for refuge.
