'The Duties of Visitors to the
Poor Apart from Almsgiving.
If I understand the meanin of the
founders of our society, they a pest the
visitors to recommend food, cljothes and
material relief of various kinds when-
ever the need has been carefully. inves-
tigated. But they -wish this relief to be
in most cases a merely ternp`arary aid,
and quite subservient to a much higher
end wl1iah they have in view. ,
Oae Tr two instances will help to de -
tete th higher aim. of visitors apart
from almsgiving:
One visitor in this city rec,,rnmends
very little relief, but she: spends certain
hours every week in going ' a` out her
district and in encouraging to er visi-
tors to do the same. She as: sym-
patliy, good .judgment and 'practical
benevolence. If she sits dowai ,in the
house ten minutes she sees s6mething
to be improved or kindly ;I advised,.
She takes an interest in the ;children,,
and if they don't want to go; tp School,,
or their parent; do not feel t e neces-
sity, she indncei both to desir it. She
visits the teachers, she goes ith . the
children.
