THE HURON EXPOSITOR,
Varieties.
Rye straw is as valuable as the
grain in Pennsylvania in the manufac-
ture of paper. With the increased acre-
age of !the season jnst closed (3,500,000
bushels), the yield is not equal to the
deman1.
—A company of citizens of Allegheny
county, Pa., are arranging for the erec-
tion of a large hoe factory at Mononga-
hela City, Pa. ithey will employ about
1,000 hands, and expect to turn out
1,200 hoes per day.
—Davy Fox, one of. the notorious.
Jesse James' gang,
has been arrested in
Kansas on charms of murder and bank
robbery. A comrade to whom he told
the story of his doings willbe the chief
witness against him.
—Henry New, assistant postmaster
at Pittsfield, Mass., has been fined $200
for removing uncancelled stamps from
letters after they had been mailed, and
selling `.them for his owvu profit, and
then substituting worthless stamps.
—The cable of the new telegraph line
_ between Aden, in Arabia, and South
Africa, touches Zanzibar, Mozambique,
Delago Bay, and Dubois, and connects
with the land line in . South Africa.
The rate will be $2.15 per word from
London.
—1llr. Strickland is a. wonderful blind-
fold player at draughts: At 'Glasgow
he played on the 21st ult. six games at
once, winning 5 and losing 1. At Eas-
ington he played 4 games, winning 3 and
losing 1; and wheu the games were fin-
ished he repeated all the moves ,made,
. backward and forward.
—Thomas Wilson, of Baltimore, left
$$5,000 to the Society of Friends, and
said he would have left them more if he
thought they needed it. But he put his
largest bequest where be thought it
would do most good, namely, into an
orphanage and asylum for the poor. To
this he gave $715,000:
—Paper as a substitute for wood in
the manufacture of lead pencils, is be=
ing.attempted in. Germany. The paper
is steeped in an ' adhesive liquid, and
rolled around the core of the lead tp
the required thickness, and is colorer:
after drying, when it resembles an or-
dinary cedar pencil.
—Mr. Andrew Carnegie, of New York,
- has offered to the corporation of his
native place, Dumferline, Scotland,
$25,000 for the establishment of a free
public,library and recreation rooms, but
Dumferline has declined the gift, be-
cause it was not known whether Mr.
Carnegie intended also to provide . for
the maintenance of the library.
—Pott -Huron has risen up as one
man against the cow nuisance. A docu-
ment 15 feet long, signed by a large
majority of the taxpayers,, was present-
ed to the city council the other evening,
announcing the intention of the sig-
natories to "insist upon the strict en-
forcement of the State law,- which
forbids animals to run at largo in the
e Teets."
—Recently a young woman from Ire-
land wished to go from {'llicottville to
Salamanca, in New York State, bought
her ticket and had her trunk checked,
and then Made the journey on foot.
When asked Why she did not ride, she
replied "They made mo pay 35 cents
for me truuk,'aud- what would they
charge for meself ?"
—Mie. Luther Beecher, an old resi-
dent of Detroit, and a millionaire, as
well as au astonishing character i a his
way, has offered to provide within 30
days the amount required for buildiug
the tunnel, on proviso that the charter
now held by :Messrs. Joy & Lothrop be
transferred to him. The cost of the
tunnel is,placed at .3,000;000.
—Probably you ; never heard of a
giu.gerbread batroriieter. A French edi-
tor has one—a general its gingerbread.
He buy-s`one at a fair once a year, and
nails it to the wall at. home. Damp
weather softens and dry weather har-
dens gingerbread, and' the editor can
tell by touching the figure with his
finger what kind of a day it is going
to be.
—The Emperor of Austria behaved
generously to his cousin, now Queen of
Spain. Prom his private fortune he
gave her a dowry of one million thalers,
and sent her away in greater state than
was observed at the departure of his
only daughter when she married:: The
troussea;t filled live railway vans. Un-
derclothing was on the scale of t*elve
dozen dozens.
—A. day or two before her rnarr•iage
the Archduchess Christine surprised_
Alfonso by a visit to the royal palace at
Madrid in company with her mother.
The two ladies rode in a cap, were very
simply dressed, and wefe escorted' by
a geutlemau in a riding -coat. Alfonso's
pleasure is said to have equalled his
amazement. His future Queen wanted_
to see the inside of her future home.
Hes
showed it to her
—The steamer City of New York, of
the Norwich Liue, collided ,.vith a
schooner on the 24th ult in New York
harbor, which crashed into her port
side, tearing away the greater part. of
the joiner work. Four hn rdred pas-
sengers were ou board the steamer, and
the excitement for the moine:nt was in-
tense, but upon the ,assurance of the
captain, order was restored, and the
passengers were safely lauded.
—A terrible fight took place near St.
Louis, :.Missouri, in an old stable, ou
Monday evening, 22nd inti., between a
Siberian bloodhound gruel Patsy Bren-
nan, pugilist, for $250 a side. The roan
was victorious afters, disgusting fight of
55 miuutes, in which his shoulders and
arms were terribly lacerated 1)y the
dog's teeth. The bloodhound had his
heavy lips torn off, and was so _badly
maimed that he died within an Hour.
The police are busy hunting up all con-
cerned in the brutal exhibition.
—The Southern prejudice against
manual labor is well illustrated in At-
lanta, G. A large cotton factory is
now in operation in that city, doing a
prosperous business. But the manager
experiences great difficulty in obtaining
a sufficient number of hands to run it
up to its full capacity. A short time
since the mill owners resolved to run
a night gang, and advertised- for 200
-women and girls to make it up. They
have not received a dozen applicants
for work as yet, and now they propose
to import mill hands from New Eng-
land.
-.-In -a toardiog house recently a
young roan on blaming off 1 is gas saw
-the words, "Confess thy si s," in phos-
phorescent characters on th wall. He
was surprised, but listening,,thought he
heard some young ladies outside the
door waiting to observe the effect on
him. So pretending to be frightened at
the match -scratch, he fell on his knees
and confessed„out aloud that ho had
frequently kissed one of the young
ladies in :the dark—the bne whom
he had best reason to suspect -of play-
ing the trick. That young lady won't
play any more such tricks imme-
diately. She thinks he is a mean, hor-
rid thing.
—In accordance with, a suggestion
from Mr. Moody in the Chicago Avenue
church, Chicago, some six wagon loads
of offerings of good things of all sorts,
meant as Thanksgiving gifts to the
Lord for the poor in that part of the
city, were brought in on Thanksgiving
Day and placed in front of the pulpit.
These offerings consisted of flour, bread,
crackers, cakes, pies, apples, pears,
grapes, oranges, lemons, canned fruits,
canned meats, fish, hams, dried- beef,
mutton, chickens, turkeys, ducks,
matches, brushes, soaps, and so forth.
—A. medical journal says our carpets,
particularly the green, are colored by
arsenic, and are liable to poison those
walking on them, and bring on a most
terrible disease. Hundreds of persons,
it says, are thus carried off every year.
This is a. serious matter, and persons
who have carpets in which green pre-
dominates, should lose no time in cut-
ting that color out or smearing it over
with black paint. In Ireland, where
carpets are not fashionable among the
poorer classes, we often hear of per-
sons living to the ripe old; age of 104
years. They are not poisoned by walk-
ing on carpets.
