What Makes Hard Times.
The following sensible remarks are
from the columns of the Commercial
Review, and are worthy the serious con-
aidars, tion of a large majority of the
people :
"Among the various causes which
hav&gradually brought about the pre-
sent depression in trade, the desire 'for
outward display, in accordance 'with
the self-imposed amenities of society,
oeeupies a prominent place. People
not only live beyond their means, bat
they strenuously endeavor to hido_ this
fact from other people. When a
man accustomed to live in a good style
finds himself financially sinking, it is
galling to hint to dispense with lux-
uries. What does he do? He holds
out as long as lie can, by making
other people carry his burdens. Soon,
however, his supporters fall, and he is -
compelled to put up with the worst.
aTow; if that man were possessed of the
moral courage to act independently of
society, his financial ruin, if it might
not altogether be prevented, would be
kept for while at bay. He would thus
be doing a service to the financial con-
dition of the nation. But the majority
of people will not do this. They will
retain their thousand and one luxuries
until these are taken away from diem
by inevitable and natural causes.
Somebody roust bear the burden of
debt, which, caste from one man to an-
other, as each finds it too oppressive,
is -ultimately thrown upon the few, who
sink under t*he weight and thus bring
about a filnanciii.l crash. The good busi-
ness marl seldom is personally extrava-
pant. He feels that he must conform
to the hard times ; but he finds it dif-
ficult to n5ake his family do likewise.
Moreover, the necessary social change is
so distasteful that he despairs, nine
cases out of ten, of ever bringing it
about. What would people say if the fam-
ily did not make its summer trips to
the country? What would people say
if the social entertainments were given
up, and if the clothing bills were re-
duced to meet the exigencies of the
timeE ? Depend upon it, the fear of
losing ground in fashionable society is
a powerful cause of the present depres-
sion of trade. Fortunately it is this
very fear which will, in the end, bring
society to take a reasonable view of
financial affairs. A money panic might
indeed prove a blesging in disguise, for
it will bring people to their senses,
and compel them to live strictly within
their- means. . The cry cif hard times
has led many to the proper retrench -
went of their expenses. But most pee-
. ple have waited until the eleventh hour
to deny themselves what has long been
s.been Much rh g ood has ac-
complished, but much remains to be
done. It is in the nature of things to
believerthat the present depression may
not give place to better times until a
great financial crash has taken place.
Meanwhile, it is the duty of society in
general to ignore artificial rules and
vain pretensions, as some measure of
atonement for its overstrained style of
living."
An American Judgment.
When a minister -63 years old asks a
divorce, and confesses that he seeks
happiness in another marriage, the least
that can he said is that he has failed in
an emergency that required self-sacri-
fice. This is the case of the Rev. New -
1138,11 Han, of London, who has just ob-
tained a divorce from a wife whose 'con-
duct had been frivolous, indiscreet, and
probably sinful for many years. But
the express admission that he wishes to
marry a particular woman, and that

Antidoteto Poison.
If a person swallows any poison
whatever, or has fallen into convulsions
from Having overloaded the stomach,
an instantaneous remedy, most efficient
and applicable in a large number of
cases, is-- inl a heaping teaspoonful of
common salt, and as much ground mus-
tard stirred rapidly in a teacupful of
water, warm or cold, and swallowed in-
stantly. It is scarcely down before it
begins to come up, bringing with it the
remaining contents of the stomach ;
and lest there be any remnant of the
poison, however small, let the white of
an egg or a teaspoonfulof strong coffee
be swallowed as soon as the stomach is
quiet, because these very common arti:
cies nullify a large number of virulent
poisons.—hfedir•ril Brief.
The Price of a Leg.
A widow, whose husband was killed
in a railroad accident, sues the com-
pany- and recovers $5,000 damages. A
man who lost his leg in the same court
and gets $15,000. The widow waylays
the Judge and charges him with un-
just discrimination in valuing a leg at
three times as much as a whole man..
"That is not the point, nay dear
madam,- says the urbane Judge. "Even
with $15,000 the roan cannot buy a leg
as good as the one he lost. But a
oman as young as you aie, and with
;,000, can have no difficulty in getting
4=a new husband." The widow retires
satisfied.
Dogs Preferred. To Babies.
An observing New York correspond-
ent of a Western paper observes the in-
crease of vulgarity amours the wealthy
women of that city. On the last grand
fashionable day in Central Park, before
those who spend the entire season away
from horue 1"iad left the city, he counted
213 dogs and puppies who were driving
with ladies in rich carriage costumes,
• and but 83 little children.

a delicately flavored beverage, which
may save us ma.uy heavy doctor's -bills.
