General News Items.
On the 3rd- inst., Mrs. Edward
Green, residing on the 15th concession
of Peel, was going about her work as
weal and making preparations to ;dye
yarn. She was seized with a fainting
fit, from which she never rallied, and
died two hours after the attack. iDe-
sawed was about forty years of age,
and leaves seven children.
—At noon, on Monday, a shocking
occurrence took plaee on King street,
Toronto, in which a lady lost one of her
fingers. It appears that two boys quar-
relled on the street, and finally closed
with each other. An elderly lady hap-
pened' to approach at the time, and see-
ing the boys lighting stepped up to
separate them. In his rage one, of the
boys turned, and catching the second
. finger of the lady's hand between his
teeth, bit it off at the second joint as
dean as though severed with a knife.
—About two years ago, John Con-
nors, a farmer in the township of Etobi-
coke, used. a quantity of Paris green for
the purpose of getting rid of the potato
bugs. He lefta paper and pot con-
taining a small quantity of the poison
in the field, and soon forgot all about
it. About a week ago he turned his
cattle into the field that they might
eat the clover previous to the fall plow-
ing, and two heifers shortly afterwards
were found dead. Upon examination it
was diScevered that the maim s had
found the pot of poison and had eaten
some of it. Farmers cannot be too
careful how they leave this deadly
poison about their premises.
—Their Royal Highnesses the Mar-
quis and Princess Louise visited Brant-
ford on Tuesday morning last. After
visiting the various places of iuterest in
the city, they boarded their own special
train for London, stopping long enough
at Ingersoll and Woodstock to receive
and reply to addresses from the corpora-
tions. They arrived in London about
half -past three, and were met at the
station by the principal magriates of the
city and an lila/31811Se crowd of com-
moners. - The remainder of -the day
was spent in visiting the various insti-
tutions and different points of interest
in the city. The Princess' appearance
is thns described: She has a plain, old-
fashioned air, and would not attract at-
tention in a crowd were her rank un-
known. Her features are regular, but
not strongly marked. Her eyes are the
most taking, they bearing a sort oC far-
off, drearily expression, as if her thoughts
were not by any means engaged. in the
work before her, and she seldom looked
around save when something out of the
ordinary attracted her attention. Many
and various were the opinions expressed,
but the highest compliment we heard
paid to her was by an old lady of Irish
descent, whom the writer overheard re-
marking, "Well, she's the fine motherly
looking bode, God bless her !"
