Champion Workman o
Connecticut.
The hardest working roan in the Sita
Connecticut lives In Norwalk. B
flab he is a Swede, and by occupatio
iron nnoulder. He is occupied in
orwalk foundry, and every day doe
bat is considered a fair day's work fo
0 men. Beginning at 4 o'clock in th
morning, he keeps busy until 7 at night
not even stopping for his meals. When
h$ goes to his work in the morning -he
carries with him a pail containing soup
d black bread. This pail he places
o a shelf over his bench, and when
ngry he grasps the pail in his teeth,
and throwing his head back drinks the
so p . While he is drinking his fingers
ar$ busy packing the sand into the
mould, and when be sops for a bite of
black bread it is but for an instant.
His day's work is .always two hundred
moulds, while one hundred and twenty
moulds is cousidered a good day's work
for a first-class workman, This Inas
seems to have no interest in anything
but his work, makes no u nnecessaiy ac'-
gnaiutances, and discourages a1 of his
companions who show a willingness to
associate with him. He is evidently
hying to destroy the remembrance of
some calamity which has befallen him,
or works incessantly to gain money to
accomplish some cherished design.
Cotton Mills at the South.
Every few days we see a report of the
establishment of a new cotton mill in
the South, and every statement of their
business condition is very favorable.
The number of looms and Spindles in
the South is rapidly increasing, and in.
a much greater ratio than the crop of
cotton. There are fifty mills in North.
Carolina, scores in Georgia, and several
in South Carolina. One estimate gives
the number erected in the South since
the war at 183. This is the bonanza
that Iles at the feet of the cotton States.
Northern capitalists are shrewd. They
know that the day will come! when no
mill that brings its cotton 1,000 miles,
its fuel 500, and the food for , its opera-
. fives all the way across the ' continent,
can compete with a factory that gets its
cotton at its very doors, Makes the
rivers tarn its mill -wheels, and the ad-
jacent fields feed. its employees. When '
the time comes for the transfer, they
mean to be the owners of the new mills,
and the capital that has paid, New Eng-
land so handsomely in years; gone by
will go South to work. It is for the
South to name the day. When it is
once settled that . life ands property
are as safe, and law and order as
paramount, allover the South as 'they
are in New England, the tide will be-
gin to turn, and the cotton States will
see a great future before them. -North

This gentleman pronounced the docu-
ment genuine, and the poor emigrant
was speedily relieved from his pecun-
iary difficulties: Oa further examina-
tion it turned out to be the copy signed
in the West Chureh Edinburgh, and it
contains the signatures of several per-
sons well known in history.
-An $8,000,000 mortgage has been
filed with the registrar of deeds at St.
Paul. It was given by the St. Paul,
Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway
Company to J. S. Kennedy, James A.
Rosevelt and J. S. Barnes, trustees.
It contains twenty-one thousand words,
runs until 1909, and bears interest at
seven per cent., payable semi-annually
in gold. _
-within a few years quite a number
of infant schools have been established
in Switzerland, and they are rapidly in-
creasing ; while at Paris, also such in-
stitutions are being _organized with a
view of powerfully aiding in the regen-
eration of the system ofprimary educa-
tion. The canton of Neuchatel is one
of the most advanced in Switzerland 1
in respect to' instruction and educa-
tional improvement, and these schools
for very young children are quite nu-
merous there.

The salaries of male and female
teachers are more nearly equal in Col-
orado than any other State in the Union,
the men receiving $49.90 per month and
the female teachers $ 16.95, less than $3
difference.
-A. memorial hall in honor of George
Stephenson was recently opened by the
Dake of Devonshire, at Chesterfield.
It is a handsome structure, costing
$65,000, and is intended for scientific,
literary and educational purposes.
-Dr. Jacob Schlessin ger, for thirty
years a leading physician at Bada,
Pesth, was lately found dead in bed
at Baden, near Vienna. He poisoned
himself in consequence of a cancer
in the nose, which he knew to be incur=
able.
-" Mrs. Partington " (Mr. Shillaber)
has just attained to 65 years. He is
not strong in health, still suffering much
from gout. He lives quietly in. Chel-
sea, near Boston, and is sometimes for
months not able to cross the ferry to
that city.
-When the Prince Alexander -of Bul-
garia entered Sophia, bread and salt
was distributed among the people, and
there were enthusiastic demonstrations
of rejoicing. One of the triumphal
arches bore the inscription : " Welcome,
Prince ! We have expected you for 500
years. .
-When Sitting Bull was a young
man, he was shot in the legs in. battle
and disabled, but he sat bolt upright
on the ground and continued to fight
with the fierceness of a wounded buffalo
bull, and it was this incident which
drew from the tribe the appellation of
Sitting Bull.
-A black aerolite fell -in a field at
Issoudun, France, and a peasant at
work near by dug it out of the soil and
sold it to a local museum for 250 francs.
The owner ofthe land - claimed the
money, and the tribunal, after puzzling
over the serious point for some time,
decided that it was his.
-Of Payne, the author of " Home,
Sweet Home," it is said that he was a
small man, and had rather a sad face,
but a quick manner. He was notice-
able for wearing a very full, short cloth
cloak, and always carrying a gold -head-
ed cane. He talked much and with
animation, and was gallant in his man-
ner to ladies. -
-Mr. Kenneth Reed, son of Sir
Charles. Reed, of London, and a Mr.
Wm. Allen, of Belfast, set out on the
2nd of July for a month's canoeing in
Ireland. On the 7th the canoes were
blown ashore on Lake Allen, near Gar-
rick -on -Shannon, but nothing has been
seen or heard of the young men.
-Queen Victoria has sent to the ex -
Empress Eugenie a frame made of vio-
lets in amethysts for the last photo-
graph of the late Prince Imperial. The
garland is surmounted by an eagle,
which holds in. his talons a three -color-
ed streamer, on which is written in gol-
den letters the motto, " Not lost, but
gone before."
-Of Talmage, the Glasgow Mail
says: `• Cotnpared with Moody he
wants earnestness, with Spurgeon orig-
inality, and with Gough the knowledge
of platform effect. Generally speaking,
had we not known that it was the cele-
brated American orator who was lec-
tering, we .night have mistaken him
for an ordinary Presbyterian minister
inaking a humorous address at 'a first-
class soiree. The audience, however,
Om it was Talmage, and so laughed
Consumedly.'

A Khedive with Only One Wife.
Strange to relate, the new Khedive,
Tewfik I., i3- an upright, honest fellow
-as upright as it seems possible for au
Egyptian prince to be. He is twenty
years old, tall and handsome, with a
frank, open demeanor, an accomplished
horseman and a scholar. Indeed, he is
hardly interested in anything but
schools, and he used, previously to his
accession, to teach personally a score or
two of swarthy scapegraces who attend-
ed a school erected in the garden of his
palace at ' Koube, near Cairo. He has
only one wife, and lives entirely in
the European guise. Will all this last?

oountry. It has been thoroughly tested, and has given general satisfaction to all
who have used it. It is no Yankee invention, got up for sale only, and_dependent
on the blowing merits of ageuts to commend it to favorable notice.
ALL THAT IT WANTS IS A FAIR TRIAL.
It is warranted to clan in any ground.- We ask the Farmers of Huron and Perth
