—One of the most terrific storms of
the season/ passed over Clifford and
vicinity on Saturday afternoon, blowing
down grain, fences, haystacks, summer
cook houses and contents in all direc-
tions, and unroofed ten barns.

Montreal shortly and will be tendered a
public reception. His friends in the

Sarauel Flannery, of McGillivray, three
miles from Lucan, containing the pro-
duce of 42 acres of fall wheat, was
burned down Tuesday morning. The
property was partially insured; cause
of fire not known.
—The Brantford Union has been
bought by Jaffray Bros.; nephews of the
publishers of the Galt Reperter. A de-
cent, respectable Conservative paper is
badly needed in Brantford, and if the
new publishers of the Union take the
Galt Reporter for their model, they may
succeed in maldiag one.
—The bodies of the three men
crushed under the fallen wall of the
hanaed McInnes block in Hamilton,
were found on Tuesday morning. They
were so burned and disfigured as to be
quite marecogniza.ble, and could only
be identified by their clothing and the
contents of their pockets.
—The barn of James Rainer, 14th
concession Maryborough, was burned at
3 o'clock Monday morning. The con-
tents, consisting of 14 tons of hay, 60
bushels of oats, a quantity of wheat and
other grain, also a thresher, buggy, cut-
ter, ex., were consumed. Insurance,
$700. The origin of the fire is un-
known, but it is supposed to have
been caused by a tramp lighting his
pipe, carelessly throwing away the
niatch.
—A contract has just beentlet by the
Government for widening the well
known and dangerously narrow chan-
nel, in the Gallops Rapids on the St.
Lawrence. Owing to the presence of
submarine rocks the slightest swerving
on the part of a vessel would cause her
destruction. It is proposed 'to remove
39,000 cubic yards of this rock by blast-
ing, and its removal will enable power-
fal vessels not only to pass down the
rtpids in safety but force their way up.
—The Parkhill Gazette is sorry to
learn that Sohn McDougall, ex-M.P.P.,
has "gone to the wall," financially.
His farm and farm stook have been sold.
by sheriff's sale. No one who knows
Mr. MeDougall will fail to sympathize
with him. He was always a good neigh-
bor and a whole-souled friend, who had
but few enemies. Now that his party
is in power at Ottawa, if they should do
anything to relieve him in his misfor-
tunes [in the way of an office, we pre-
sume,] every Grit in North Middlesex
would be well pleased
.—It is discovered that large deposits
of timber lie sunken at the bottom of
the river St. Lawrence at various points
adjacent to Montreal, and daily the
timber is being brought to the surface
by gangs' of hobnails and others,' who
sell it to dealers in the city. The
bottom of Longueuil Bay, near the
shore, would appear to be literally cover-
ed with timber, and during the past
three months a number of men in
canoes and provided with chains and
grappling ;hooks have been busily en-
gaged in bringing up the logs and float-
ing them ashore, where they are hauled
away by horses and piled for sale. The
timber consists almost entirely of white
oak and. walnut. It is estimated that
most of it has been in the river at least
from 30 to 40 years, and has formed
portions of the numerous timber rafts
that in transit from the west to Que-
bec have been wrecked or damaged at
or above the Laehine Rapids. Some of
of the logs brought up within the last
few days at Longueuil are two feet in
diameter and from 30 to 60 in length.
They corainand when delivered in
Montreal fromthirty to thirty-five cents
per foot.
—Considerable excitement was creat-
ed in Toronto on Wednesday by the
'rumor afloat that Cool Burgess, the
noted. negro minstrel, had shot and
wounded Wm. Widgery, fruiterer, of
Young street. The report on enquiry
was confirmed. The particulars and
circumstances leadiun to the affair are
as follows : Burgessbaslong suspect-
ed Widgery ofhaving had criminal in-
tercourse with Mrs. Burgess, which
fact led to separation between husband
and wife. The minstrel came over to
Toronto from Niagara, where he is new
living, on Sunday last in response to a
telegram stating that his mother was
dying and desired to see him. He stop-
ped at his brother's saloon Oil Young
street and was there Wednesday night
at helf-past ten o'clock, when Widgery
and a companion named Blakely came
in. Widgery turned. and invited him to
take a drink. This Cool refused. to do
when Widgery is alleged to have
called him some hard names. This so
enraged Burgess that he drew his re-
volver and ded two shots at the man,
wounding him in the hand and. arm.
-Widgery obtained a revolver from
Blakely and. fired. one shot at Burgess,
who was not hit. Burgess then beat a
retreat, and was immediately removed
to the country, where he is at present
hiding. Widgery's wounds are not con-
sidered. serious. The matter will be
investigated by the police, as arrests
are expected to be made.

cattle ; 376 hogs, and 2 horses. Of
these, all the sheep and 17 carloads of
cattle were shipped to Europe. This
morning there were 9 carloads of cattle
—nearly all grass-fed—offered for sale
at the St. Gabriel Market. There were
very few buyers in attendance, and no
demand from shippers at all to speak
of; hence the great majority of the cat-

a just public as to the verdict, which, in the past,
has not only enabled him to compete with but to
