You'll find that kissing is like eating soup with a fork." "How so, sir," ask- ed the student. "Because," answered the stern ad professor, "you can't get enough of it." Where was this assault made upon you?" asked an attorney of a stu- pid witness, who was presecuting a neighbor for assault and battery. By?" asked the witness. " At what place was the assault made?" repeated. the attorney. The great man addressing him, said; I suppose, sir, you want ray Vote and, interest at this mementous epooh of your life ?" "No, I don't," said, ,Abernethy; "1 want a penny worth of figs. After finishing his visit as he wae leav- ing the house he said to the man'S wife. "My good woman, do you not go to any church at all ?" Oh, yes, sir, we gang to the Barony Kirk." Main or New Hampshire. , Accosting the first -person he met, who happened -to be the merchant himself, he asked: "Yon don't waut to hire a man in your store, do you?" "Well " said the merchant, "I don't know: ; what Call you do ?" "Do?" stiid the mall '; "I rather -guess eau turn my hand to almost anything -what do you want done ?" “Well, if I was to hire a man, it would be oue that could. lift well, a strong wiry fellow, one, for instance, that could shoulder a sack of coffee like that yonder, and "carry it across the floor and never lay it down." - There, now, Cap'tin," 'Said the'coun- tryman. "that's just me. I can lift any thing 1 hitch to; you can't suit Me bet- ter. What will you give a man that will suit von ?" "I'll tell ou," said the merchant, "If you will shoulder the sack of coffee and carry it across the floor twice and ,never lay it down, I will hire you a year at $100 per month." "Done," said the stranger, and by this time every clerk in the store had gathered around tied waiting to join in the laugh against the man, who, Walk- ing up to the sack, threw it' across his shoulder with perfect ease, although ex- tremely heavy, and wellsing with it this: Married at RI twice across the store went quietly to a near Oakley, Stafford. day, 30th instant, le net Clutterbuck, L. 1 T. Braidy had been discharged the morning before for drunkenness, and had been heard to make a threat that he would get even with Findlay. He was nowhere to be found, but 'was traced to Glasgow, where it 'was be- lieved he had taken a vessel for Am- erica. Wm. Male, the detective, was employed by the relatives of the mur- dered man to come to this country and search for Braidy, who, it was thought, would go to the Pennsylvania coal re- gions, -where he had friends Working. One of Braidy's peculiarities was his love for the bag -pipes, so. the detective, being a piper, adopted the disguise of a Scotch piper and played in the coal towns, in the hope of attracting the at- tention of the man whom he was seek- ing; being sure, from information he had received, that Bra* really was somewhere in the coal regions. The ruse succeeded after two years' patient trial. Male is new on his-- ay to Scot- land with the alleged murd rer. Prince of Wales' Visit' to Aus- tralia. The Central .News has good authority for saying that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales will proceed in the In- dian troopship Serapis, to visit the Aus- tralian International Exhibition at Syduey. No positive or direct orders have yet been received on the subject, but a question has been put by the An- miralty as to when the machinery of the Serapis will be ready for sea, and the reply has been returned that 48 hours would suffice to prepare the ship in that respect. The internal fittings would take about two months to com- plete. The Serapis was the vessel which conveyed the Prince to India, and she was the next on the list for ser- vice; but it is understood that His Royal Highness expressed a- wish to have thet vessel placed at his disposal, so that the Jumna was sent instead with troops to the Cape. The Serapis has an advantage over the other In.- dian troopships, inasmuch as she is con- siderably higher between decks, and has a much greater width in the hatchways. The Serapie has been taken out of dock and brought alongside the dockyard, so that her preparations can be proceeded ith at any moment. How to Dry Flowers With Sand. There are many of our brilliant flowers-- such as dahlias, pansies, pinks, geraniume, sweet Williams, carnations, gladiolus, which may be preserved so as to retain their color for years. White flowers -Will not answer for this pur- pose, nor any succulent plant, as hya- cinth, or cactus. Take deep dishes, or those of sufficient depth to allow the flowers to be covered an inch deep with sand. Get the common white sand, such as is used for scouring purposes, cover the bottom of the dish with a la,yer half an inch deep, and then lay in the floWers, with their stems down- ward, holding them funnly in place while you sprinkle more sand over them, until all places, between the pe- tals are filled and the flowers buried out of sight. A. broad dish will accommo- date quiteal large number. Allow suf- ficient sand betweeu. Set the dish in a Professor Blac e's Notice. A good story is tail in Edinburgh about that genial Grecian. Professor Blackie. One day, shortly before the close of the late session, the professor being through some cause prevented' from lecturing, there vas posted on the Greek class -room door a notice to this effect : "Professor Blackie regrets he is unable fto-day to meet his classes." A waggish. student, spving this, scraped (1" out the initial letter o the last word of the sentence, and ma e it appear as if the professor was regretful at his in- ability to meet those fair specimens of humanity familiarly known outside the college quadrangle as he "lasses." But who cau joke with B1 ckie ? The keen - eyed old' man, noticin the prank that. had been played. on h in, quietly erased, another letter, and left the following to be read_ by whom it may concern: "Pro- fessor Blackie•regrets he is unable to7 day to meet his asses " , .1 Cumbrous' Titles. , The New York Pos the useless and cumb English aristocracy, s .„ in referring . to ous titles of -the ys : • • URON EXPOSITOR.
