The new steamship Arizona, Of the Wilhanis & Guion Liverpool line, arrived at New York an the 8tk instant, having outstripped her schedule time by an entire day, and proved herself among the very fastest of merchant steamer:;, as'. she is, except the Great Eastern, the largest afloat. She was built by Messrs. Elder & Co., of Glasgow, and made her trial trip on the 23rd of May. Two days be- fore that she left her dock for the first time and welt down the Clyde to Gar- lock. Here she was swung, her com- passes were adjusted and everything was made readyfeor her trial trip, cluriug which her engines worked with smooth- ness, the great ship making seventeen and a half miles an hour. She arrived in the Mersey on tho 21th., having be- haved spieuclidly during the passage from the Clyde. A week later she left Liverpool on her maiden trip to this port, touching at Queenstown an Jung, 1. She is therefore seven clays out from Queeustawn and eight from Liv- erpool. - Her model is one of the finest it is possibl.e to imagine, her lines anti clears sheer being these of arasing yacht, and her four masts and two funnels, all of which have a slight rake, add an extra nautical feature to the generally grace- ful appearance of the ship. She is 465 feet in length, 46 feet beam, 37:% feet depth of hold and -close, on 6,0u( tons burden. Her engines are the latest inn- prevenient on the compound principle, there 'being ti,vo low pressure cylinders of an indicated horse power of 7,000. She is propelled tvitli a four -bladed -. screw 23 feet in cjaineter, with a pitch of 33 feet. The steam is generated. by seven double -ended boilers, and the consumption of coal is estimated at about 100 tons per day for full steaming purposes. There aro an the main deck five powerful steam wiuches, with doable -ended gearing capstan for work- ing the anchor, &c: She is steered from the bridge by steam, and in case of an accident is fitted up -with the usual manual steering gear in a wheel house, protected by a strong turtle -back deck. There are also steam pumps and a powerful engine, by which any quantity of water can be brought to any part of the ship in a few seconds. The whole lenotl, of the Main deck affords a splen= did promenade. There is a fine stretch of clear deck of upwards of 400 feet, aud it can be used in all kinds of weather, as it is protected overhead by the pro- jecting sides of the spacious saloon (leek. In fine :weather there is nothing whatever to interrupt tho view seaward While a long range of permanent seats on each side rf the deck -houses will af- ford. passengers an easy lounge. The splendid entrance to the saloon leads from forward. the main deck o' id- The saloon has two separate e trances. From this room ladies have easy &ooess to the saloons, and here, on the main deck, a splendid :promenade pre Bents itself, the view being uninter-- rapted from stem to .stern. - TThesaloon oocupies the entire h.readth of the ship, and is lit' up by thirty-six silver plated lamps; it is also furuished with revolv- ing chairs, a splendid full -toned piano and a library. The state -rooms, which are sitaatecl fore and aft the saloon, are fitted up with every consideration for the, comfort of the passengers. Nothing ,appears to be left undone for voyagers' comfort, bawl -rooms, barber -shops, wash basins, etc., being carefully sup- plied. Aft of the saloon is situate•1 the intermediate accommodation. Noth- lug could exceed tite caro which has been bestowed upon the arrangements 4 e. provided for this class of passengers. The ceiling is lofty and the cabin is flooded with light, the sleeping berths are -well ventilated, lighted and lofty, and combine comfort with a degree of elegance rare in iriterrnediate accom- rncldati»n ; in fact it is not many years since this cabin wou]d have been con- sidered on exceptionally good _saloon in solp:e.of our ocean-going steamers. The " steerage " is a vast Improvement on anything of the kind :hitherto provided, the•berths being lofty, well lighted and ventilated: The comfort of the steer- age passengers appears to have entered as much into the consideration of the builders and owners of the Arizona as that of - the more atluent and, favored class of ocean travellers. She can, if necessary, accommodate -2,000 passen- gers, of whom 160 can dine together in, the saloon. She is commanded by Cap- taiu James Price, Sr., the: oldest, most trusted and most experienced of the Company, Company, which company, by- tl}e-way, has not lost a single life for tj$ last thirty years.
