W., Staten Island, N. Y., Mary 22-, 1879. ' A Reminiscence of Old_ Mona- • ghan Inhabitamts. Memory often retraces youthful saenes in the picturesque old town of Monaghan and vicinity, when little time was lost in reading newspapers, whieh were few and far between, and, considering the value of money then, seven times the price they ate now. The news -vendor supplied. himself with the leading papers of =Dublin. and Bel- fast, and gave them., for a penny an hour the first day, a half -penny the second, and sold them for half-price the third day. The firet daily in. Ire- land was Saunders' News Letter. The press was so slow that only choice reading matter was published, and eagerly and attentively read. It might be a question for a young rpen's de- bating society, whether families were not better without the light literature or sensational caterings which now pan- der to morbid tastes by a wonderfully quick steam press. • 1 • Previous to the inventions and dis- coveries of the last fifty years, which have saveti time, distance and labor, people were satisfied with their slow methods of business. There was little or no speculation in real or personal estate. Few made haste to get rich, or to get out of the old groove of their fathers. They seldom went beyond a few miles from home. Blind !beggars, • buckle beggars, sturdy beggars, cripple beggars-, and harmless lunatics (then at largen did not annoy them. Came From whence no traveller will return. eron. —Peterborough Review. - Intellect in Brutes. 'A Petrie writes: "In my own fam- ily we had atabby cat who, when turned out, would let herself in at another door by climbing up some list nailed around it, then pushing up the clink -latch push- ing the door, with herself hanging on it, away from the post, so as to prevent the latch falling back into its place, and then dropping down and walking back to the fire. I know a sky -terrier who, being told. to carry a fishing -rod, Care- fully experimented along its length to find its centre of gravity, then carried it on till he came to a narrow path through .a wood. The sky considered, dropping the rod, took it by the eud, and dragged it under him lengthwise till the open road. was gained, when he took the rod by the centre of gravity again and went on. This could not be a copy of human actions, but by the re- sult of original reasoning." Henry Cecil gives the followingon the authority of the late Mr. Dawes, the the as- tronomer: 11 Boing Busy in his garden and hav- ing a large bunch of keys in his hand, he gave it to a retriever to hold for him till he was at liberty, Going into the house soon., after he forgot to reclaim the keys. The remembrance of what he had done with them only returned. to him when he required to use them in the evening. He then recalled that he had given them to his dog, and for- got to take them again. Calling him, and looking impressively in his face, he said, My keys! fetch me my keys." - The dog looked wistful and puzzled for a moment, and then bounded off to the garden, his master following. He went straight to the root of an apple tree, scratched up the keys, and brought them. May we not fairly put into words the dog's train of reasoning thus: " My master has given me these keys to hold; he has forgotten them; I cannot carry them all day, but I must put them in safety where I can find them again?" R. Howson sends us the story of a terrier -like dog of no particular breed named Uglymug, who had a poodle for companion. Whenever Uglymug saw signs of a family meal being laid out, he inveigled the poodle into a labyrin- thine shrubbery under pretence of seek- ing for rats, and when the latter was fairly intnut on • his game, Uglymug sneaks baCk to enjoy all by himself, what he could get from the family ta-e The Successful Housewife. The first step toward- success must' be learning to love the Work. If a girl brought up in the city used to the ways of city life marries a thrifty young farmer and undertakes to do the house work necessary for her to do, or to oversee it done, she may be astcnish- ed to find it disagreeable.' Thinking in her innocence, that sheis willing to do anything for him she loves, she by de- grees finds she is not. Tired, discour- age(' and heart sick, she yearns for her old home, but knowing she has .chosen her lot and must abide by her choice, she assumes an indifference to her work which soon becomes a reality, and she plods around as a machine mightphould one be invented to do house -work. Her husband knows things do not go right in the house, but can devise no means to better them and also grows tndiffer- , ent, and when children begin to add their noise to the general confusion, he flees to the field by day and the vil- lage store by night, and the poor wife has another grief to add to her catalogue of WOOS. By learning to love her work the young housewife (arid old one too, perhaps), may avoid much misery of mind and body—I say of body—for we well know the body sympathizes with the mind, and often one feels sick when one is only worried. The farmer's wife has much work to do that the mechan- ic's wife knows nothing of. It amuses me to hear women tell hew much work they have to do, and vvhen you get at the root of the matter, they hire their washing done; hire. their dresses cut and perhaps made, and have no milk to take care of! 1 ! I sometimes wonder what they would do if the care of the milk of half a dozen cows was added to • their work. We farmers' wives have one advantage. We can see nature in all its beauty. Our work requires us to be up in the morning, with the birds, and as we step about skimming milk, working up butter, washing and scald- • ing pans and pails, no one can hinder return Bleaadell .our drinking iu the beauty of the morn. - cross,) we wilfully deny ourselves a .Eh ing, but when tired (and shall I say it, even.— ethe choena glance out at the open door, and when husband comes in fresh from the dewy •Les* fields and while tracking our clean floor ing colic wofully, speaks of the fineness of the tallidron morning, we see - only the dirty boot yetairsi' est' marks and answer accordingly, we have a few of not learned. to love our work.
