—The residence of Mayor ,Willson,
aVingliam, had a narrow escape from
fire last Friday. A spark from the
kitchen chimney ignited the shingles ou
the roof. By the prompt application
of a little water it was soon extinguish-
ed.
--On Monday last at Gorrie, as Mr.
T. G. llohnee and Burns Smith were
*working above the dam getting out logs
with a raft composed of a few loose
boards laid across two logs, several boys
onped on for a, sail, but got a swim.
The raft separated. over a hole fif-
teen feet deep, and two of the boys who
could not swim would have been
drowned but for the superhuman exer-
tions of Mr. Holmesr ,
—at a meeting of the Huron Pres-
bytaay, held in Clinton last' week, ar-
rangements were made for the induc-
tion of Rev. Mr. Clendenbing into the
pastoral charge of Grand Bend. The
induction will take place on June 26th.
The Rev. A. Y. Hartley will preside,
Rev. Mr. McCoy will preach, Rev. Mr.
Denby will address the minister, and'
Fay, C. Fletcher the congregation. The
Rev. A: Y. Hartley. was appointed as
Commissioner to General Asserdbly, but
reeigned in favor of Rev. Mr. Thomp-
son, of Brucefield.

During the storm on Friday last,
a cow belonging to Mrs. Mawherty, of
the 3rd concession, Logan, was killed
by the falling of a tree in the bush, and.
another was so badly injured that it is
doubtful whether she will recover. It
is an old and sometimes a -true saying
that "misfortunes never come singly."
The truth of the saying was verified,
however, in Mrs. Mawheny's case. On
Sunday morning, as she was on her
way to church, the seat on which she
was sitting tipped back, throwing her
baok over to the ground. Her injuries

MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.—At the an-
nual meeting of the Brussels Mechanics,'
Institute, held. on Wednesday last, Jas..
Wilson was elected President, C. R.
Cooper Vice -President, F. S. Scott
Secretary -Treasurer. The old Board.
of Directors were re-elected. The finan-
cial report, we are glad to say, shows
the Institute out of debt, the first tirae
since its formation. It is hoped that
the public will continue to give the
Directors the aieeessary patronage to
keep it in its present financial condi-
tion. Since thetfire there have been
expended' for books over $400.
RAIN STORIC—On Saturday evening
last a very severe wind and rain storm
passed over the town from west to east.
The damage done was not great, shade -
and fruit trees suffering the most. A
continuous rain fell up to Wednesday
evening. The crops all look well, and
were greatly in want of ram.. -

The old Presbyterian Manse was sold
here by Mr. D. McPhail on 5tonday,
and purchased by Mr. John S-cott, for

—The town of St. Marys has suffered
considerablY from fires lately.
—Mr. David Swanson, J. P., of

—The livery stable of Mr. John
Brown, of Carlingford, was totally con-
sumed by fire on the evening of the 24th
of May. No insurance. •
—A few days ago a son of Mr. Rich-
ard Kube, of Tavistock, was severely
kicked by a stallion. The Loy's nose
was broken and. his face seriously disfig-
ured.
—A chance for those who desire a
cheap trip to Nebraska, will be given on
June 10th. 'Through coaches will be
run from Listowel to Lincoln, Nebras-
ka. Fare for the round trip, $31.
--Elder Wm. H. Swegmiller, Utah
Territory, U. S., delivered a lecture in
Stratford last week. He _is making a
tour of Ontario for the purpose of advo-
eating Mormonism.
—A pair of splendid two-year-old
steers, destined for the English mar-
ket, were brought into Stratford by
Mr. George Hyde one day last week.
They were of Durham ,variety, and
weighed 3,190 pounds. ,
—Messrs.D. Oliver Sr., John Good,
James Brown, John Oliver, and James
Roger, left Motherwell neighborhood
for Manitoba on the 27th uk. It is
their intention if the country pleases
them to taiee up land and remove their
families.
—During the thunder Storm of Sat-
urda,y evening a lady in 'Stratferd was
stunned by lightning. She Was taking
in the newly washed clothes in -the Yard
as the steno, came on, when a flash of
electricity came down in the locality.
She lay insensible for some time.
— It is reported. that M. De Lesseps
has already commenced the foundation
of a company to construct the Panama,
Canal. The first subscriptidn of 400,-
000,000 francs will be opened simultane-
ously all over the world next Septem-
ber, and M. De Lesseps will take out
the Balt spadeful of earth. next -New
Year's Day.
—Messrs. Macdonald, Macpherson
& Co., Stratford, lately received from
their agent at Fn3erson, Manitoba, an
order for three of their celebrated
" Standard " steam threshing machines,
and three engines to drive the same.
The value of the order was $4,200.
These machines are for use among the
Mennonites, who are already becoming
large producers of wheat.

in a hotel m St. Marys on the evening
of the 24th ult. Mr. Henry Barbour
was attacked. and felled to the floor
with a beer bottle by a young man
named. Woolway, who, not contentwith
striking down his victim, Tepeated the
blow, cutting his head in a fearful man-
ner, and seriously endangering his life.
It was for some tithe thought the results
might be fatal, but he is recovering.
—Robert Jones, one of the partici-
pants in the row which occurred at
Bornholm at the last municipal election,
was bat week fined $50 and costs by the
Stratford Police Magistrate. The
charge against the defendant was that
he had strulck one Keyes over the head
with the butt end. of a whip. Jones
has been absent; in the States since the
conennasion of tlae alleged offence,which
accounts for thel case not -having been
more summarily disposed of.
— Last Friday night a tramp was ar-
rested in an empty dwelling in Strat-
ford. On an inventory being made of
his stock -in -trade, which consisted of
"a well:assorted Stock -of general mer-
chandise," in addition to varied. and
sundry fighting weapons, it was found
to be as follows :—A heavy six -barreled
Colt's revolver, anal supply of ammu-
nition for same, such as powder, balls
and caps ; a, murdereus looking knife,
the blade of which Wes two feet long,
and the handle of corresponding length;
5 hats of different shapes and styles, 4
fur caps, 5 pair pants, 4 coats, 3 vests, 6
shirts, 5 grain bags. On being arraign-
ed before the Police Magistrate on Sat-
urday morning the tramp gave his
Dame as Davis, and said he belonged
to Cayuga. He was fined. $20 for carry-
ing offensive weapons, and ordered. to
leave town,..which he did forthwith.

Montreal Horse Market.
MONTREAL, June 3.—During the put
week 203 horses, valued at , $16,960.50,
have been shipped from here to the
United States. Among these was a
carload of fancy horses, said. to be the
best lot shipped from this market this
year; they were for Caufman & Son.,
of Pennsylvania. Animals for com,non
use have been in demand during the
past week; prices •range from $50 to
$100. Heavy draft horses are in
demand, but are not in, the market.
Cheese 1VIarkets.
INGERSOLL, 01*, JIMA 3. — Fifty
factorymen and Il buyers were present
at the cheese market to -day; 20fa.ctories
representing 5,485 boxes; 6ac to 61c
was offered; no Sales of importa.nce re-
ported; buyers and sellers apart. Part
of the day was occupied in discussing
the advisability of changing the maeket
day from Tuesday to Monday. A res-
olution was passed. recommending a
change, a vote takeu and carried. The
next market will be, as usual, on Tues-
day, when it will be decided which day
it will beheld on in future. ,

Live Stock Markets.
MONTREAL, June 2.—During the past
wee l4 56 cars of cattle were received at
Point St. Charles for shipment to
Europe, and 13 cars for the local mar-
ket; also 810 hogs, 30 korses and 30
sheep. The shippers of cattle were:
J. R. Minhimisk, of London, Ont., 13
cars; H. Johnson,, of Toronto, 14 cars;
J. C. Johnson, Toronto, 9 cars; J. P.
Wiser, Prescott, 8; W. Carnegie, To -
Tonto, 4; G. Walker & Son, Ailsa Craig,
8. There were eleven carloads of cattle
on the St. Gabriel market this morning.
There was a:brisk demand for choice
stock of shipment, but very slow call
for butchers' supply. John Stagg sold.
three cars, aggregate weight, 66,560 lbs,
at 5 cents. Wm. Head bought of Thos.
Peart, one load of choice steers and
heifers at 5a cents; also, one- car for
shipment at 5 cents, and four head, of
Wm. Roberts, of Granby, at Cie. Mr.
Head sold three cattle to H. Boyd. at
5fc. M. Laporte, of Middleway, sold
ten extra cattle at 5110 per lb, to John
Bryan, of Quebec, and the balance of a
carload to different butchers at 4ie to
qc. George Patterson, of Guelph, sold
33 head at $74 each, or 4ic per lb. N.
O'Grady, of Whitby, sold. one carload at _

per lb. P. O'Rourke, of Shakespeare,
