a. satire on our -common nature, a hu-
miliating confession of our being unim-

A Coxcassrox TO TASTE. -A. needy-
looking•fellow watching a man select-
ing a watermelon from a huge pile out-
side a Detroit grocery store renaarked :
"I wish I had five cents to get a small
melon; I haven't tasted. oue for over
two years." The money was placed in
his hand, and the giver had just found.
a melon to his mind. when he spied.
the object of his charity coming out of
drinking-shep. "I thought you want-
ed that monea' to buy a ;melon," said
he. I did," was the reply. "I told
you I hadn't tasted melon for over two
years; but, after reflecting, I found. I
hadn't tasted whiskey for ' over three.
Thereore, I gave whiskey a chance to
catch up with the melon and start off
square. -Nothing mean about, me, sir."
