And Farmer john never in IWO him again, not even to this day. , Paris, had as extraordinary and inc tonally wicked a. career as any -over strained French novelist has painted for his most delightfully -depraved he roine. Her life was startlingly strange. After being the favorite of rich bankers Dukes, and Princes, after involving them itt jealousy, duels; dis, grace and ruin, /per spending royal ransoms, and living in imperial luxury, she died in a miserable cellar, without a friend or a sou in all the world. Born at the Vil- lage of Jouarre of poor parents, she re- solved, to experience the dangerous fas- .einations of Paris. She .walked all the way there at the age of 15, and. meeting with a needy artist in the Latin Quar- ter, fell in love with him, and became his model and mistress. She gained avide fame for beauty from the pictures he painted of her—his portrait of her ae " T8" electrifying tlae capital. She must have been bewitching per- sonally. Everybody bid for her, and she sold herself for the highest price. She went from nobleman to nobleman, from, banker to Prince, causing many of her lovers to commit crime and sui- cide and rejoicing apparently in the tragedies which she made. Finally, a distinguished man of sooiety, thaddened by his passion for her, killed his father, his in her affections, and then seizing her in his arms, leaped with her out of the window. He was picked op .dead, she badly wounded. But she re - ,covered., though with a scar on her face that spoiled her beauty. From that time she lost her power. to charm, and her radiant fortunes were eclipsed. Her wealth .melted away; adversity befell her; she 'sank into penury and self -disgust. She became a box -opener at a low theatre, a waiter at a mean wine -shop ; she met with an ac- cident that obliged her to go perma.- neatly on crutches. Wretched, ill, ut- terly worn out, she started to- walk to: her village home. She fell ifi the - streets of Paris before she had gone a mile, tun' a rag -picker finding her car- ried her into a wretcb.ecl cellar, where she breathed her last ou a heap of straw. She was 37 when she died, and on her neck was a copper nialal—given her by her parents—on which was in - Scribed, with her name and the date of her birth, "God defend her from evil and euide her to a happy end." The xneda°1 she had always worn, regarding it as a talisman.
