judge Rives paid the Preacher.
Tadge Alex. Rives, when a young
man, saw a good old preacher riding
down the Monticello road (then a single
track.) A boy with a long cross -cut
saw lying crossways on his horse, was
-also corning down the same narrow
road, some distance in the rear of the
preacher. The boy's horse ran away,
.and as be was approaching the pious
divine, the latter sprang from his h.orse
and scrambled up a precipice. Where-
upon the Judge exclaimed;
"Bless my life, Mr. -, you have
told me that pin were 'ready, willing
and anxious to clic,' why then struggle
so hard to get out of the way of that
horse and saw?" •
" Well, Mr. Rives," the good man re-
plied, "1 am anxious to die, but do not
wish to be sawed to death."
This circumstance reminds us of the
following froin the Gotar;er-Journat:
"If a man is going to the woods to
commit suicide, and. a bull suddenly
gives chase, the chances are that he
will run for his - life. Of course he will
run.. He is goiug to the woods to com-
-mit Suicide, and not to be killed. by a
- btill. Besides, do you suppose. a man
wants to have 110 last moments disturb-
ed by a personardifficulty that may cot
him his life ?'
•
General Suggestions.
On Monday, wash; Tuesday, iron ;
Wednesday, bake and scrub kitchen
and pantry ;' Thursday, clean the.eilver-
ware, examire the pots and, kettles, and
look after stock -room and cellar; Fri-
day, devote to general sweepiug and
dusting; Saturday, bake and scrub
kitchen and pantry floors, and prepare
for Sunday. When the clothes are
folded off the frames, after ironing ex-
amine each piece to see that none are
kid away that need a button or a
stitch. Clean all the silver on the last
Thursday of - each month, and go
through each room and closet to see
that things are kept in order, and
nothing going to waste. Have the sit-
ting room tidied up each night before(
retiring. Make the most of your brain
and eyes, and let no (me dare tell you
that you are devoting yourself to a low
sphere of action. Keep cool and self-
possessed. _Work done quietly around
the house seems easier. A slamming of
oven- doors, and. the rattle and clatter of
dishes, tiro and bewilder everybody 1
about the house. Those who accom-
plish muclt in house -keeping -and the
same is true of every ether viork in life
-are the quiet workers.

-We have been lookina up the
Ahkoond of Swat, and find that he was
the cousin of the Nawab of Joonaghur;
uncle of the Rajah of Kolapore, and dis-
tantly related to the Bhow Sahib Suug-
li. His wife's brother was the Rao
Ragpoot, and his brother:M.10.w was the
Nawab of Pahlimpoor. The Ahkoond
of Swat's uncle's cousin's brother was
the Dewarn of Gwalior, and the Begum
of hoped was a distant relative of his
m ther-inlaw. The Jana of Nowanny-
gur was his most intimate friend, while
the Nawab of Radhunpoor used to live
in the same fimn he did.. Neverthe-
less; the Ahkoond died. -
-If.signs don't fail, the *laming win-
ter will be the coldest experienced in
this latitude since the country was dis-
covered by a man named Mr. Columbus. -
The squirrels are laying in their -winter
coal, the beavers are putting heaters_in
the basement of their lodges, the bees
have killed off all the drones and lined
their hives with sheet -iron; the musk-
rats are flying south, wild ducks are
committing suicide, the goosebone is
black 16 inches deep, western editors
are soliciting wood in exchange for sub-
scriptions; poor families are buying en
extra dog, and we have had a new co ar
put on our overcoat.

Horse Sense.
Josh Billings says : am not aware
that kolar is of enny very grate import-
ence in selekting a horse. We see good
ones and very indifferent ones ofall
kolors. A. horse who stands fifteen
hands and three inches high, who iz a
brite blood bay with coal black points;
haz a full tail that alhnost reaches the
ground az he stands; not too heavy a
mane, or foretop ; a long lean nek and
lied, a small muzzle : wide between the
eyes, and eyes a liquid. hazel; long
sharp ears; short hal; short from the
knee to the ground.; long from the knee
to the top oy the withers; sharp, thin
shoulders ; well shaped bak ; net too
wide in the breast;.full and well raised
loin; broad and powerful quarters;
open nostrils ; flat legs, with the least
bit ov flesh On them possible; a short
and uprite pastern; a deep and small
fut ; black -hoofs, round in the ribs; not
too much ackshun. At the knee; feet
well under him whei4 he stands ; good
courage; six years (id, and weighing
not to exceed twelve, hundred. pounds.
Such a horse az this, if he haz got a
first-rate walk, will do to buy if the
price iz all rite."
Happy Thought.,
• X. had summoned a cab and•was well
on his way when the horrible sus-
picion that he had left his pocket -book
at home an the pia114 became a terrible
truth.
" Hi, coaehee," he exclaimed, as he
neared his destination ; ‘L holcl. on -
pull up -I've dropped a fifty -franc
piece in the straw here. Wait till I
run over to the shop opposite and get a
candle."
So saying he sprang out of the vehi-
cle, and was neither surprised nor dis-
pleased to see tile coachman -whip up
his horse and disappear round the cor-
ner at 1.02:14 gait.'
