DECEMBER 20; 1878,
The Rev. C. Chiniquy oYl; `FTN 3
Travels.
On Board the Pacific Steamer City cf
Sydney.
19th September, 1878.
gss,--.Honolulu, where we landed on
the 9th,'jand stopped about tell hours,
means " The Paradise of the Pacific,"
tstd it deserves its name. After seven
days of seeing nothing but the blue sea
and the skies, the traveller feels inex-
pressible sentiments of pleasure in go-
ing around the majestic promontory of
Diamond Head, and passing at the
feet of the volcanic mountains which
border the ocean to reach the " earthly
paradise which the mighty and naerci-
id of God has planted there, in
the very midst of the sea." Our
sorer had to pass very near the coral
reef. against which the mighty waves
niche ocean break with a thundering
noise from one end to the other of the
year, before we entered the narrow pas-
sage which led us to the port. I must
here confess my incapacity to do
justice to the subject on which
I have to write. The . beauties
and grandeur of the scenery, the ma-
jesty of the volcanic mountains which
rise to an altitude of 14,000 feet on
some of the islands, must be seen to be
understood. One of the most curious
things I have ever -seen was a multitude
♦f black objects which were moving
over the sea all around the steamer,
when we entered the port ; I took
them at first for the heads of large
Ashes. They moved. with such rapid-
ity, they were plunging and coming to
the surface with such an ease, that it
took some time before I could persuade
myself that these were not fishes, but
young boys from twelve to eighteen
years of age. More than fifty twenty-
five cent pieces were thrown by ladies
and gentlemen from the deck into the
deep waters, and not a single one of
them was lost. They had hardly
touched the surface of . the sea, when,
as quick as lightning, . every swimmer
disappeared, making the waters boil as
if a thousand big stones had been
thrown into them. But before a min-
ute, we were amazed by the sight of
the swimmers coming to the surface,
with the twenty-five cents between
their teeth. At last I took two ten
cents and threw them over their heads
as far as I could, thinking that the
smallness of the pieces would make it
impossible to see and grasp them, but
in less than half a 'minute two of the
swimmers were laughing, with their
heads over the sea, and the ten cents
between their white teeth.
"You told me," I said to a gentle-
man of Honolulu, who was among the
passengers, '° that there were at least
15,000people in your city ; but where
are the houses to lodge so many peo-
ple f" He answered the with a smile.
"It is just so—our houses are invisible;
they are so well covered with flowers -
and surrounded by fruit and shade
trees of every kind that you cannot see
them. But come on shore 'and you
will find them." And it was so. The
houses for the greater part were like
the hummingbirds' nests, concealed be-
hind a real forest of passion vines and
flowers, roses of every color, oranges,
bananas and cocoanut trees, algaroba,
hibiscus, bread -fruit, mangoes, umbrata
trees, and other flowers and trees, the
names of which are unknown to me.
Fair city of the most happy homes !
Bright and fragrant blossom of an ever
spring land and sea.
. Every one yon meet in the city has a
smile on his lips, a kind word on his
tongue, and a friendly wish in his heart
for you. I never saw such cheerful
faces, never heard such joyful laughs,
never felt my hand pressed with such
warm-hearted feeling as in Houelulu.
There is a smile in every flower you
touch, on every fruit you taste, in every
breath of the air you breathe in. Hono-
lulu. Where can we find such a pure
atmosphere. and such fragrance and
perfumes as are the ones which come
from the sea and the mountains of that
enchanted island ? When one is in
Honolulu with the heaps of oranges,
bananas, water and musk melons,
strawberries, apples, plums, pineapples,
cocoanuts around him, and with au at-
mosphere perfumed by flowers of every
form and color, rose, orange, carmine,
red, blue as the sea, white as snow, he
is tempted to say with Peter : " Lord,.it
is good to be here; let us make our tent."
Milk Jewelry.
A new industry has been started in
Mansfield, Massachusetts, by Kingman
and Hodges. It is no less than the
manufacture of jewelry out of sour
milk. This seems a strange anomaly,
but it is a fact. The milk comes in the
shape of curd from the butter and
cheese making counties of New York,
and looks upon its arrival a great deal
Mike popped corn ; but before it leaves
their shop it undergoes a wonderful
change, and receives the name of
American coral. The secret in making
it up is carefully guarded, but it is cer-
tain that it has to be heated very hot,
'during which coloring is introduced,
followed by a very heavy pressure.
Some of it is colored black and called
jet, while some appears as celluloid. It
makes very handsome jewelry, nis
made
is
ode into all kinds' and styles a
to the trade.

omfort-ing," By a thorough knowledge of the
natural laws which govern the opera-
tions of digestion and nutrition, and by
a careful application of the fine proper-
ties of well selected cocoa, Mr. Epps
has provided our breakfast tables with
a delicately flavored beverage, which
may save us many heavy doctor's bills.
It is by the judicioususe•of such articles
of diet that a constitution may be grad-
ually built up until strong enough to re-
sist every tendency to disease. Hun-
dreds of subtle maladies are floating
around us ready to attack wherever
there is a weak point. We may escape
many a fatal shaft by keeping ourselves

J-Nirt regard to the Great Shoshonees Remedy
and Pills. Levi Jones, Markham, says: "I had
a very severe attack of bronchitis. I was so bad
that -r could hardly get my breath. I sought for
a quick remedy, and seeing the " Shoshonees
Remedy " so highly recommended, I procured a
bottle, and am happy to say that by the time it
was taken I was entirely well, and have'remained
so, although I' was much exposed through the
winter in travelling." Rev. F. B. Stratton, Dem
orestville, writes : " I : have found your re -
`medics particularly beneficial for liver complaint,
dyspepsia and bronchial affections, and would
advise all similarly affected to give them a trial."
John Finlayson, Athol, says : " When travelling
one of my feet got sore and broke out. I could
not cure it, and had to return home. It became
bettor and afterwards much worse. I finally pur-
chased a bottle of the Remedy and a box of Pills,
and before they were half gene I commenced to
improve, and before they were finished my foot
was .completely cured. It is now 17 months
since, but have had no further attack." Price
