-John McDonald, farmer, while
threshing at McPherson's, at Glen-
morris, on the 13th inst., 'had his
clothes caught -in the gearing (If the
cylinder, and while trying to save hina-
self the wheels caught his left hand and
tore it off. His clothes were torn com-
pletely off. The arm was amputated
above the wrist. Notwithstanding
the severe shock, the patient is doing
well.
- Last Saturday evening a lire broke
out in a hotel stable in Welland, and'in
five minutes the whole building was in
flames. Seireral blocks were in danger, -
but the engine saved them. There is
no doubt it was thework of - au incen-
diary, as about the same moment that
the fire broke out the proprietor of the
Dexter House detected a fiend attempt-
ing to fire his barn. The party was ar-
rested and. occupies a cell in the county
?eliding. It is thought there is another
party concerned. -
-Mrs.-John Parker, a teacher in the
Presbyterian Sabbath Schod at Kirk-
-wall, was recently presented by the
members of her class with a massive
crystal set, consisting of twelve pieces.
While thanking them kindly for their
valuable present, she reminded them
that their individual and early consecra-
tion of themselves to Christ Would be,
to her, a far more abundant recompense
than. any material gift which it was in
their power to bestow.
-A by-law has been passed by the
Town Council of 13rockville, giving Mes-
srs. Steinhardt & Son, of New York,
silk manufaCturers, $12,000 to establish
a factory in that "place. Messrs Stein-
hardt & Son agree to erect stone or
brick buildings about 150 feet equare
and, give a mortgage of $3,000 tO stand
'three years, in consideration of a cash
advance of $3,000, and they to receive a -
subsidy of $1,000 per year for nine
years without interest, provided they
employ one hundred hands on an aver-
age throughout the year. The by-law
will be submitted to the people on the
9th of December.
-On Friday evening last a represen-
tation numbering over three hundred of
the leading business men and farmers
of Waterloo, Oxford, Brant, Wellington,
and adjoining comities met in Hill-
born's Hotel, Ayr, the occasion being a
complimentary dinner to Mr. John
Watson, of the Ayr Agricultural Works,
on his having been recently aavarded
the only gold. medal allotted the Do-
minion for agricultural iniplements at
the Paris Exposition. Among those
present were Messrs. Gavin Fleming,
Young, Galt, in the chair ; Professor
Johnston, Agricultural °liege and
McDougall, Registrar, Berlin ; John
Craig, Woodstock ; Dr. Meldrurn,
Arthur Tew, David Goldie, &c., &c.,

tell is that two of them were tall fellows,

Heron is evidently of the opinion that

has just been married for the third

troducedinto practical use in Montreal,
Orders have been given for lighting the

the new light will be in use by the time
the Vice -Regal party arrives. The light
will be kept burning by means of horse,
