TIIOSE- Cows. -We have' always been
under the impression that there is in ex-
st,enco. al tewn by-law which prohibits
owners of cows allowing ther animals
.1;to run at large on the pu lic streets
from the'first of November to the first
of May in °edit year. Last year this
by-law was rigidly enforced, this year
it would .seern that our authorities have
forgotten about it, as the first of No-
vember hss come and gone, and still
cows are, allowed to roam at will over
the publie streets. The Council should.
either repeal the by-law or secure its
enforcement.
Doisee IN COUNCIL -At tlfe , last
meeting of the Town Council a requisi-
tion was presented from the Public
School. Board asking for $3,200 for school
pus -poses' for this year. A petition
signed by A. G. MODougall and others
asking to have e proper inspection and
measurement of all cordwood sold with-
in the corporation, was read and receiv-

parb a by-law iu accordance therewith,
to be considered at next meeting of

To the Editor of the Huron Expositor.
SIR: The electors of Centre Huron
have grossly insulted "Canada's Great-
est Statesman." By their verdict on
Saturday, 2nd inst., they have made it
painfully manifest that they do not ap-
preciate that pure system of merality,
of which Sir John is the ablest expoun-
der and the most illustrious example.
Who other than a depraved Grit can
but deplore the ungenerous treatment
accorded to the self:Sacrificing band of
missionaries, who fought so heroically
to reclaim Centre Huron from the
thraldom of the Wok. Think of it !
the gifted Hawkins, eager to meet and
extinguish Cartwright, compelled, nu-
clei. a drizzling rain, "to waste his
sweetness on the desert ail." Mr.. Roe,
too, that dazzling child of genius from
Lennox, who only wanted the oppor-
unity to annihilate Mackenzie, implor-
ng. in vain to be allowed to perform the
operation under the public gaze. Then
here was Joseph Gibson, of temperance
fame. What so appropriate as his de-
fence of the chieftain? Who so likely
as Sir John. to carry out or illustrate
Mr. Gibson's views on the great prob-
lem of the age. Amen, amen? we im-
