Baithe0 and Ba,thing-Suits.
There are times and seasons when it
is incumbent upon everybody to look
their best. But there are other times
when everybody is at liberty to look
tlisir very worst, and such times are
,aeaLainly the bathing -hours at Long
Branch. The beauty who has capti-
vatea the hearts of unmarried swains
theevening h.op, is by no means cer-
tain to prove a Venus as she rises from
-the merciless waves. The stately ma-
-tron of goodly proportions, whose ma-
jestic carriage and dignified mien are
universally admired, proves to be very
like what is irreverently called "a por-
poise," as she waddles down to the wa-
ter. While; on the other hand:, your

ang7suit. Wh.y the popular bathing-
' .suit should be as unnecessarily ugly as
it is, we leave to those who use them.
"There might be a dress devised. for dip-
ping into the sea whiCh should be lboth
pretty and graceful. But many a wo-
man of taste who otherwise would put
on a becoming dress for the surf, is de-
terred from so doing by the knowledge
that she would thereby bee, oine the ob-
served of all observers. Nobody feels
-partiaularly comfortable or well at ease
when going down the beach in a bath-
- nig-suit, and_ nothing could. be more dis-
agreeable to a sensitive person than to
be stared at at sueh times by the idle.
loungers ;who are always congregated
upon the strand for the sole purpose of

A somewhat remarkable race has been
arranged at Cincinnati. Profs. Gilbert
and Hayden, Loth aeronauts of seine
note have 5ust made a match for a
balloon race between the balloon A.
Erkenbrecher,holding 60,000 feet of as,
and the balloon Leo Steel, holding 48,-
000 feet. Prof. Hayden bets $500 against
4300 that he, with the ,smaller balloon
will rise hig,her and remain in the 'air
longer than. Gilbert with the larger one,
each to send a man with his rival carry-
ing instruments to determine the height
I attained. The match from its novelty
is attracting considerable attention.

: Rather Hard.
. A large dead shark was recently wash-
, ed ashore at San Francisco, in whose
1 stomach was discovered a nian's lea, the
foot of which. was enclosed in a heavy
shoe with a copper toe. This copper
to reach the bath house, with the same toe had cut the lining of the fish's
stomach and resulted in its death. As
soon as the Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals were made aware
of the cense of the shark's death, a
warrant -W1pus issued for the arrest. of
the man. I As one of the Members
remarked, it was,, time this putting
up of jobs on inoffensive sharks was
stopped.. '
