"Extravagance is the cause of hard times," said a capitalist yesterday. We Must be more economical. Ten years or I commenced working in a mill in Goia Hill at a small salary, and in less than a year I owned the mill and had money in bank." are right," returned a listeners with great earnestness. " It is possible for a mareto lay up .$2,000 or $3,000 a, .month on a salary of $ 5 a day, but he' must be very -economical and have the handling of the amalgam." The Barroom Jaurnalist. e stands in the store with his back tothe stove and tells how he could. run ,& newspaper ; how he ceroid be as in- • ,dependent as a hog on ice, and call ,things by their right names; how he would expose corruption in high places how he would write goodcommonsense, and none of your; frivolous, try -to -be- any stuff. Then he criticises other people's methods iof conducting, news- papers, and just : wished some one would give hire a change to show his. - journalistic ability. The way to cure one of these chaps is to get him to agree ; to write a sensible articievery day for a. week. Before the yveek is out he is sure to be pumped dry, and will gape worse for an idea than a chicken does. with the pip. • The Thirty Dollar Secret. Peter. Cooper, in a recent conversation with arepoter said:" About thirty years ago it man came into my office and of- fered to sell me a great secret for thirty dollars. He was so persistent and his condition was so pitiful that' finally consented to buy it. I paid him the money and. he told me the secret.'.' Mr Cooper said` that it was a process of treating seed corn which would doable its productive power. The corn should be covered with glue and rolled. successively in lime, guano, &c, and planted with the accumulation thus gathered around it. "I gave the recipe," continued he, " to a man in New York state, and he reported that the yield of corn so treated was double that of corn planted in the usual way . - Princess Louise. - The Princess Louise - to whom His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught is betrothed, has°not yet completed her eighteenth year. She is the third and youngest daughter of Prince Frederic Charles and of the PrincessMarie, danghtei of the late Leopold Frederic,. Make of Anhalt. Her sister, the Prin- cess Elizabeth, who is some three years older, was -married in February last to the Hereditary Grand Duke George of Oldenburg, at the same • time that the Princess Charlptte, the eldest daughter of our own Princess Royal, was united. to Prince Bernhard of Saxe- Meniingen. The eldest daughter of Prince Frederic Charle;i, the Princess Marie, though she will be the last of thorn to be married, is flow but twenty- two years of age. Care of Canaries. I r this Way I answerhe question of "how I have such lieu with birds." Simply by allowing the'birds to attend to their own affairs, and by letting them -understand that their mistress would never harm them.., Alsy, by accustom- ing them to plenty of li ht and air and ;company, rather than, as recommended in books, keeping the nage 'u a dark room for fear of frightening the birds. Make just half the fuss direc d in bird- books over the matter and you will have double the success in raising birds. Never give them suor, but all the red. pepper they will eats And if your bird feels hoarse at any. time put a piece of fat salt pork in the cane, see haw the - little fellow enjoys it, and listen for the -result. Give him -flax seed once in - a while, and if he appears E_umpy occasion- ally, give a diet of bread and butter, withred pepper sprinkled in. The Lesson in i. Sneeze. As the rule, a sneeze S the warning nature gives that some part of the body is exposed to a cooler temperature than the other parts, and that the sneezer is " catching cold." Next to the warning, what is the use •of a sneeze ? It throws open the pores of the whole body and induces a gentle perspiration ; in a word' it throws off the cold. A child rarely sneezes more than ,. twice—perspiration is eadily induced in youth ; an old man, on the contrary, sneezes hal( a dozen ti es, with a loud- ly explosive " catchogue " It is harder to set hip perspiring. When one is Sitting by an open wi dow and finds himself sneezing, natur tells him he is taking cold. He should get up instant- ly, walk about, and take a full tumbler of cold water to keep up the gentle perspiration that sneezing sets in motion. if he does this lie will not be telling an hour after that he has !a " cold in his head," or chest, or lungs. • Terrible Encounter vritb. a Fu- rious o1.ts I3uII. Late last fall Mr. Lardin, a resident of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, who ,is a man of wealth, and at special ad- mirer of blooded stock, imported from England a splendid two-year-old short - horned Durham bull, ata cost of $2,350; also two Durham heifers at a cost- of $at0 each. " El Toro" was considered, not only by his owner, but by all who say him as one of the most perfect spe- cimens of his species ever brought to boards stood the awful test, )but one of his horns struck Mr L. 11(oon the left shoulder, and passed over his ehest tine til reaching the breast bone, where but for the shelter afforded by the wall a death wound must have been inflicted.' By lying as still as he, could, while the bull was bunting with all his might, Mr. Lardin kept feeling cautiously for the ring in -the animal's nose, when a sudden movement brought - it within reach, and it was instantlyseized by the desperate man. With a quick wrench and a death- grip the 'bovine Sam- son found himself instantly shorn , of his strength, and the terrible battle _ceased. With both wrists almost broken, both thumbs nearly dislocated,- his body crushed and bleeding and nearly strip- ped of clothing, Mr. L. staggered to his feet and led. the bull out of the stable, across a lot to an eight -rail fence. Here he palled the brute's nose up after him as he climbed, until he was ready to drop on the other side, when he let go and ran as fast as his legs could carry him. -0i,! City. Derrick. - Enoch Arden Outdone. Paris, which furnishes from real life so many plots for novels and dramas, now sends us a story which if true, makes Enoch Arden quite an ordinary hero. A few weeks ago there appeared in a Paris newspaper an advertisement saying : " A widow, young and - good looking, mother of four children, • with- out fortune, desires to marry a wealthy and honorable man. Address B. R.' Penniless widows with four dependent, children are - not generally sought after with much zeal in the matrimonial market, but this advertisement brought three answers. These went however not into the handsof the " widow, young and good looking," but into the hands of her husband. In fact the lady in question was' not yet a widow at all, and the advertisement did not come from her. Herhusband, after a struggle such as many men have made in recent years, despaired of being able to sup- port his family. He therefore decided on a plan to save them from want. When the answers to his advertisement were received he investigated them carefully and assured himself that one of them came from a man whose inten- tions were honorable and whose world- ly goods were abundant. He finished his work by putting this gentleman in the way of communicating with,' his wife, and then he.made her a widow by drowning himself g- himself . ,. Of the result the report says that the man whose answer to the advertisement was approved, learning the true state of the case, took charge of the education of the children: - Whether a wedding will follow we are not informed. Mothers in our early life used to apply it to any bruise or contusion, especi lly to bruises upon the forehead. Notwithstanding this ` illustrious example, we prefer the application of very warm water. Let ' us see how the two operate : Cold ap- Iplied to the surface has a check the flow of blood.. the same circumstance, Thus, applying cold water to a bruise or ccontusion stops, more or less, the blooctin its course through the injured part. The spot is "black and blue." Applying hot water compels the moving fluid to hasten its course and,be far away from the . scenes of turmoil. So the blood hastens on its way and. leaves very - few mark's of its presence- Ordinarily, bruises and contusions rupture senile capillary blood tubes, and allow t .lZlood. to ooze out.
