Brackets and Picture Frames.
tt Where do you get such pretty
brackets ?"lis a q estion often asked by
any visitors, and when I answer in the
woods," they look surprised, for the
brackets are a species of Fungi that
grows upon fallen logs or 3iseased trees.
some farmers will persist in calling
them " toad -stools." v hen thoroughly
.dried I get some man to square them a
little on the top and nail them to the
wall, then treat theca to a coat of var-
nish. They are just the thing to hold
house -plants, and I have a large one
fastened above my kitchen table which
•does good service as a lamp shelf. I am
- -told that very large ones are found. on
*hemlock trees, but my searches have
Been confined to lots of oak and a tam-
arack swamp. Last fall, while looking
for them in the latter, our hearts were
made glad by discovering some of a
real myrtle tint showingthat Nature does
not quite ignore fashion in coloring her
ornaments. Last week in a little space
that I made by crowding my spring
sewing ahead aizd the house cleaning
back, I fashioned two picture frames,
which are as pretty as they are cheap.
The foundation for the first was an old
frame of painted pine, about two inches
Ride. I first scraped off the paint,
then glued on moss that I had gathered
from an old rail fence. I put on the
prettiest tufts I could find, but kept a
line of the dark along the outer and in-
ner edges while I filled the `space be-
tween with the lighter colored. When
finished. I put a fine spatter work pic-
ture in it. Then on another foundation
of about the same width, I glued groups
of cones, acorns, horse chestnuts, etc.,
filled in etween with biickwheat, and
covered a with. a coat of varnish. I
forgot to ay that I first pasted some
old black cambric over the frame and
let it dry Into this frame I put a chro-
me of so e foxes playing at the mouth
of a cave, and think the whole very
harmonious and woodey. -
A Mistake in Bargaining.
Residents in auld

r wham ne'er a
toon surpasses," who pok back for
a period of sixty years, cannot but .re-
member the unique form and figure of
wee Willie Logan, who kept a hard-
ware shop at the foot • of Newmarket
street. Willie was an. oddity in appear-
ance, very little in stature, had a
strongly -developed squint, and from his
long habit of crouching himself inside
his shop, which was literally packed to
the door, Willie t, had awiggle in his
walk like Kate Dalrymple," and when
waddling along the street had the ap-
pearance of a magnified S. Itwas said
by jokers that from this old fashioned
dealer you could get from a " needle to
an anchor." One article for which Wil-
lie was famed, and of which he sold
largely, was seasoned pots, a long range
of which stood every day along the
front of the little shop. At Ayr mid-
summer fair it was customary for farm-
ers and crofters to bring over cows and
ponies from Arran for sale, and pur-
chase for their domestic use at home
sucharticles as were needed. An Ar-
ran farmer having A comrnision from
his guidwife to purchaseea, large pot,
gave Willie's establishment a visit. Se-
lecting a pot suitable to his mind, he
lifted it in his hands, and holding it up,
said, " What you'll gi'e for the pot ?" " I.
want nane o' ye're pots," said the cross-
grained dealer. Thinking the merchant
dull of hearing, the would be purchaser
again repeated in a louder tone, " What
you'll gi'e for the pot ?" Getting irri-
tated at the farmer's persistency, Willie
-shouted in a higher key, Gae wa, gae
wa. I want nano o' ye're pots, I tell
ye." Vera weel, I'll juist tak her
awa'," and off Donald 11I'Nico1 marched
with his:pot unpaid.
Too Much Decoration.
-Ladies who live in the country are
particularly liable to " overdo " their..
decoration. They get many a hint of
- beautiful objects that can be made with.
little trouble from magazines and pa-
pers, and they must needs try their
skill in constructing knick-knacks.
Sometimes -a beautiful ornament is thus
made ; but many times the lack of the
needful materials, so easily `procured in
the city, but so difficult to find in the
country, will cause a poor, imitation of
what was designed to be a " thing of
beauty."
We might cite many exarb.ples of this
enthusiastic pursuit of various kinds of
fancy work—worsted-work, for instance.
We shudder to think of the time spent
--w asted—the eyes ruined, over ugly
pieces of embroidery, ottomans, pillows,
slippars, ete.
A -parlor ought not to be littered with
such trifles. Better a few good andnot
costly pictures in inexpensive frames ;
ornaments sparingly used, but beautiful
in themselvesand from association ; a
very few thrifty plants, not too delicate,
but those that will give plenty of
flowers, and will not require all the
sunshine; best of all,goodbooksinplain
cases. Leave space for the new volume
and the magazine upon the .table, and
for the bright evening lamp ; space upon
the table, and for the. • ehildren's toys,
and for themselves to frolic : and let not
even the honest dog or the gentle cat be
banished lest they break or mp:r 'some
frail piece of fancywork. So Lihall we
be rept from the worry and care of too
many treasures, and find time for read-
ing,. for study, for play with the little
ones, and perhaps for practiying at
tittles the almost lost art of plailn sew-

Heroine.
Lake :ltichi tau has its Grace Darling, -
and her fatli _r and brothers- are as
brave and heroic as she is herself. San-
ford W. Morgan is keeper of the lifo-
saving station at Grand Point au Sable,
Michigan, and, after the close of navi-
gation, he allows the crew to go away
for the winter, but remains an the
ground with his daughter and hiS sons.
At daylight on March 23, during one of
the most violent gales of the Season_,
with the sea so boisterous. that 't was
covered with foam, a fishing both was
discovered about three miles Off ( shore,
in, (Es:tress. by _Miss E4ith. Quickly
giving the alarm to her fa:tlier and two
brother* she urged them): to go, volun-
teering to take an oar herself to assist
the crew. It seemed as though a boat
could not possibly live in the mighty
wares, but one was launched, a•I after
a pull of two hours, with seas breaking
over the small boat and threatening its
destruction and the loss of those on-
board, they succeeded in reaching the
wreck, to find that one of the crew who
liad been clinging to the side of the ves-
sel had become exhausted, and letting l4 hold had been drowned. An-
other sailor, however, was rescued as he WALL
was about to give up, and was taken LL
ashore, nor was this the first time that
the brave young girl had ventured out
on an errand to save.
A REMAREABLE RESULT.—It makes no
difference how many physicians, or how
much medicine you have tried,it is now
an established fact German Syrup is the
only remedy, which has given complete
satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Dis-
eases. It is true there are yet thousands
of persons who are predisposed to Throat
and Lung Affections,Consumption,Hem-
orrhages, Asthma, Severe Colds settled
on the Breast, Pneumonia, Whooping
'Cough, &c.,who have no personal knowl-
edge of Boschee's German Syrup. To

natural laws which govern the opera-

has provided our breakfast tables with
a delicately flavored beverage, which
may save us many heavy doctor's bills.
It is by the judicious Use of such articles
of diet that a constitution may be grad-
ually built up until strong enough to re-

L For over twenty years " Bryan's
Pulmonic Wafers," have maintained
their raputation for curing coughs,colds,
and pulmonary diseases. Those suffer-
ing or threatened with any of the symp-
toms of bronchitis, or any of the pul-
monary complaints, should at once give
them a trial. They give almost im-
mediate relief, and if taken in time gen-
erally effect a cure. Remember that a
common cold or cough, if not attended
to in time, often lead to that distres-
