A Weasel's Attack on a Child.
e, For some weeks Mr. Pierce, who
r. lives in an old brick house near the
canal in Georgetown., has heard a pecu-
liar noise at night, and discovered the
tr gradual loss of chickens. He came to
s the conclusion that it must be made by
rats. Friday night he a,nd his wife
_ were awakened. by a sharp cry of dis-
s tress from the crib adjoining their bed,
f in which their two-year old infant was
sleeping. Mr. Pierce immediately
sprang out and discovered a, weasel at
his child's throat. Catching the ---ani-
mal with his hand he threw it on the
floor, killing it at once. A few moments
later the little one would certainly have
been killecl, as a deep gash was already
made in its throat. The . animal was
about 18 inches long, very slender, with
short legs.— Washington Star.

The Female, the Woman and
the Lady.
I divide. woman into three classes—
diefemale, the woman and the lady.
The female can only be distinnuished
by her sex, and often not by that. There
are females :low in moral chardcter
as the loweet type of man. They have
ne sympathy, no sentiment, no intuitive
love foe the young. We meet such as
these ou the streets night and. dia.
Let us say 110 more on this topic. Tho
WOnnon is a step higher. She has com-
passion and sentiment. Where elaall
borrow language to desetsibe the lady ?
The distinctien of her sex lies many
layers below- the plane of her elegance,
Mere handserneness and `prettiaess give
place to beautiful intelligence. She has
intelligence, tact, end sympathy. The
bruised reed she does not break and the
smoking flax she does not extinguish,
for she knows thert‘ may be SO/110 lam,
beut fires there. She sways without
exerting authority, and the influence of
her. yweeence MoVee people without pro-
pelling them. The days move serenely
on under the benedictions of her words.
She makes care bearable and. laborsi not
burtlen-;ome. There are two roots. of the
English word lady. In the firet place
the title seemiles one -who is lifted up
above the level of bar kind. She is se-
lected hy a lord te he hie helpmeet She
distinguiehed by her wealth and her
raiment. That definition has no sig-
niactmee with us. No man in this
country eau lift a woman to his level, for
all are in the same plaue. There is a
pump ,us imitation ef class distinction
and that is an. The other defiritien of
a lady is a, "" bread. giver ;" that is to say
the mistress of her household, who dis-

stand still, while the rest of the world
moves forward.. It is no main's duty to
deny himself every luxury, every com-

man's duty to make an iceberg of him-

self the enjoyment that results from
generous actions, merely that he may
hoard up wealth for his heirs to quarrel

ally commendable to the man who
struggles with ha,ppiaiess, and. which
must be practised- if the poor man
would secure independence. It is al-
most every man's privilege and it be-
comes his duty to live within his means;
not up to but within them. Wealth
does not make the man, we admit, and

ASTONISH/NG SUCtESS,---It is the duty
of every person who has used. BOSCHESE
GERMAN SYRUP, to let its wonderful
qualities be known to their friends in
curing Consumption, severe Coughs,
Croup, Asthma, Pneumonia, and in
fact all and lung diseases. No
person can use it without immediate
relief. Three doses will relieve any
case, and we consider it the duty of all
druggists to recommend it to the poor
dying consumptive, at least to try one
bottle, as 40,000 dozen bottles were sold
last year, and no one case where it fail-
ed was reported. Such a medicine as
the GERMAN SYRUP cannot be too -wide-
ly known. Ask your druggist about it.
Sample bottles to try sold. at 10 cents;
regular size, 75 cents.
EPPS'S Coml.—Grateful and comfort-
ing.—" By a thorough knowledge of the
natural laws -which govern the opera-
tions of digestion and nutrition, and by
a -careful application of the fine proper-
ties of well selected cocoa, Mr. Epps
has provided our breakfast tables with
a delicately flavored beverage, which
may save us many heavy doctor's bills.
It is by the judicio, ususe of such articles
of diet -that a constitution may be grad-
ually built up until strong enough to re-
sist every tendency to disease. Hun-
dreds of subtle m.alaclies are floating
around us ,ready to attack wherever
there is a weak point. We may escape
