being brought before the magistrates on

—Messrs. A. Cowan and D. Brecken-
ridge of Morris. have, we are informed,
traded farms. Mr. Breckenridge's farm,
which is situated about a mile east of
Jamestown, consists of 100 acres, and
is valued at $3,000, while Mr. Cowan's
farm, 150 acres in all, is set down at

--About three months since a man
-went to the house of Mr. Andrew
Pringle; lot 21, concession 9, Turnberry,•
and, being in poor health, was taken in
and allowed to remain, Mr. Pringle
thinking he would be all right again in
a few days. The man, however, became
gradually worse, and died on. Sunday
last. Who he was. or where he came
from, we could not learn. This is . an -
.other of many instances to show the
necessity of a County Poor -House.
—The Grand Jury of the York Coun-
ty Sessions have made a presentment,
suggesting that the Police 'Magistrate
should have the power of punishing by
fiegging those fd and guilty of beating
their wives or women ; and that boys
should be more often birched than sent
to jail to herd with hardened crireinals.
The suggestion is about the most com-
mon sense one that has emanatedfrom
a Grand Jury within the memory of the
oldest inhabitant.. There would be
fewer cases of wife beating if the brute
guilty of it were made to feel in his own
wretched carcase the sensations pro-
ducable by a " cat " or a rawhide, and
fewer boys would grow up to be natural
criminals if they were flogged into peni-
tence in their youth, instead of -being
sent to school to old jail birds.
