The First Sunday Schpols.
In Scotland, though a. Presbyte
minister bad a Sabbath school in his
house as early as 1756, Sunday teach
as a system, sprankfrom 'the effor
Robert Raikes. In i795 Under the aus-
pices of annum:damn association called
the "Edinburgh Gratis SSlabath School
Society," a school was opened at Ports-
burgh,aad by 1812 the society had under
its care 44 schools and 2,200. children.

John D. Lewis, head of the dry good

trial it was proved that Lewis was the
son of a Virgiaia slave woman and a
Canadian, the mother having fled to
Canada during the existence of ievery
in the United States. On- Monday last
the Supreme Court gave decision in the
case. It sweeps away all provisios of
the will except that giving Miss Taylor
the income of the estate till she is law-
fully married, and whether she b.as.child-
ren or '11.0t) the estate then goes to Lewis
and his sister.
