been instructed to itnpouncl all cattle
found running at large on the streets,
between the first of December and the
first of March, Hungry &ewe had be-

entering the village with a little _bundle

dozen hungry cows making for it with
open mouths, as though -trying to see
which can get the first bite.

Monaca' Presbyterian College, held on
• Friday 24th November, before a large
audience, Mr. D. L. McCrae, son of Mr.
John McCrae, of Morris, took an active
part in the exercises of the evening. The
Montreal Herald in its report of the

Mr. 0. L. McCrae on the influence of
literature, in whieh he very ably traced
its history, its beneficial effects, and its

to English literature."
-A_ most distressing affair occurred
in Stratford. last week. Matilda Willis,
the unfortunate victim, was,
a few weeks
ago, to all appearance, a healthy and
prepossessing gal itt the bloom of wo-
manhood. She went to Stratford with
two of her friends th be married to a
young man named Worth, who resides
in Mitchell, and 'who ptemise'd to meet
them at the station and accompany them.
But he didn't. The reason alleged for
Worth's not accompanying his intended
bride to Stratford, was that -his people,
were opposed to the match. This seems,
however'to have been a mere /else to get
rid of the unfortunate girl whom he had
ruined. Finding that her seducer had
made her his dupe, her grief was inex-
pressible. She had fondly hoped that
once united. te him she might lift up, her
head again in society. She refused to
return to Mitchell with her friends, but
visited a medical man, who afterwards
attended her at the hotel where she
was stopping, =awhile under his charge
she died. It was supposed that an abor-
tion had been committed. An inquest
was held. and the jury returned a verdict
to the effect, that the medical attendant,
Dr. Lnca.s, did ,feloniously kill,. the de -
'ceased. The doctor was committed for
trial. The deceased was a neice of Dr.
Gardiner, of Lacknow, and was highly
•respected by the peoge of the town
where she lived. A warrant has been
issued for Worth, the vile wretch who
seduced and then meanly deserted her,
but he has not yet been captured.
