The instrument used in tattooing, the
captain say-s,was divided into three parts.
The part holding the fluid was slit like a
pen four inches long, and 1 f inches wide
coming down to two points. In the mid -
_
(Ileo was a cylinder of brass four inches
lone, and on top was a third piece, four
inches long, of iron, with a knob at the
end. The three parts were joined by
capsules._ The instrument was inserted
between the thumb and forefinger of the
left hand to guide it, and the right band
made the punctures with extreme rap-
idity. -
The.captain has several scars on his
person. as evidence of his numerous en-
gagements; and these show , plainly
- through the tattooing. Ile has seen

Congeniality. _
Girls, in marrying,if yon would ensure
happiness, choose a congenial companion.
-one who is quick to catch your meaning
--whose thoughts are your own—who is
"good company " always. If, though he
be handsome, you grow a little tired of
him ina few hours—if,' thoughhe be
abieto offer you a fortune, you can't -think
_ of mach to say to each other—if, after
the conventional cooing and kissing,there
is really nothing -between you, and you
do not want to chatter to him and he
finds refuge in a. newspaper -if there are
no cosy tinws, and when you are not
lovemaking there is a sort of dead wall
between you --mark my words.—you will
not be happy together. People do not
bill and coo a „treat deal iifter a fe-w years
of marriage, lmt congeniality binds man
and wife together more and more as the
years go by. It is the real being in love
—the happiest part of it at least, and
'without it many a pair, who have not
had -a. doubt of themselves while the
courtship- was upon them, often wish
themselves, if not dead, divorced, any-
thing to escape the dreary hours which
they are forced to spend together.

Exchange between the United
States and Great Britain.
Let us look at the commodities ex-
changed between the British Isles anti the
United- States. Great. Britain and Ire-
land sent to the United States the year;
ending June, 1874, goods to the value of
$237,298,218. Of this nearly $20,000,-
000 were manufactured cottons, $26,700,r
000 iron and steel, $I5,800,000 lined
goods, $6,412,000 silks, $13,000,000 tin.
During the same period England import-
ed from the United States products to the
value of 5341,024,049. Of this sum;
$106,914,645 worth were breadstuffs,
$140,000,000 for cotton wool, 541,000,000
for beef, bacon butter, cheese, &c., 55,-
000,000 for produce of the forest, 56,-
900,000 for manufactures, and 54,000,-
000 for fish. Consider this statement ;
out of exports amounting to $341,000,000
the agricultural population contribute
8325,000,000. From this statement it
will be seen how very small a part of the
raw material used in the manufacturing
industries of the United States are paid
for by the manufacturers with their own
products. -
