himself, and, after a long pease, began :
"Now this tiresome country Squire will
be expecting me , to ask li4n to dinner.
Shall I ask hini 'or shall I not? No, I
think it would he a bore." 1 The individ-

first confounded, but, recollecting his
companion's infirmity, coMmenced, in
turn an audible soliloquy: "Now, this
tiresome old Peer will, of course, be ask-

well taken, and the invitation was given
in earnest and Accepted.
After sitting a longtime.. with a lady
to whom- he was paying a morning visit
Lord -Dudley eitelaimed aloud, "f won-

go away,"
At a dinner i given by Lord Wilton,
who had one of the beat cooks in Lon-
don, Lord Dudley tasted some dish . of
which he did not approve) and, forget-
ting where be was, began apologizing to
the company for the badness of the en-
tertainment, i ‘i The feet is," said he,
"that my head cook was taken ill, and
some kitchen girl, I suppose, has been
employed to dress the dinner." 1
rd Dudley, receiving a visit from the
poet Rogers at Pans, proposed that they
should go together to the Cataconibs.
It has often been remarked of Rogers
that with his 'flee bald head, wrinkled
skin and sunk cheeks, he was more like
a death's head' than any Man that was
ever seen alive', ; Accordingly, when the
poet had spent I an hour Or two in the
abodes of wort°, ity, and AS about to
make his exit. he keepe , startled . at
his death -like appearance tried to stop
• him, crying Out, " Hulloh ! Get you
hack ! You ha.teino right to come oiet !"
- Rogers afterward complained to Lord
in this emergelic • " my eer Rogers,"
Dudley that he IA cruelly deserted him
replied the Earl, i " I did n t like to in-

young horse to a trainer to break. The
animal appeared to be as tractable as the
majority of colts of his age, and his edu-
cation' progressed rapidly until Sitturdey
afternoon, when the trainer drove him
out to the Ocean beach. As soon as the
colt 4ught a glimpse of the bOupless deep

dashed off toward the breakers,- Think-
ing that a dash of water would cool his
ardor, the trainer merle no extraordinary
effort; to cheek his colt; but when he
found himself in three . fathoms of water
with the infatuated animal still heading for
sea, he concluded that it was time to
change his taelics, and, resigning his rib-
bons, he 'plunged into the 'water and
swam ashore. The colt, however, con-
tinued on his 'course till exhausted by
battling with the waves, and, ine,umber-

was viewed with curiosity by a number of
persous who heard the story of the ani-
