Journals Two Thousand Years Old - The first Roman Journal, over 2,000 years ago, appeared only once a year. This pa,per intended to be read by the public, was known by the title of A nnales axinii. The -editor of this paper was the Pontifex Maxinnus whose duty it was to ithronicle all the impel -tat events of the year. The news was written on white wooden tablets, and attached to the residences of the citizens. It must have beeu a very curious sight to see the old Romans crowahr arouncl these tablets to get a look at the latest news. But the thirst after knowledge and the euriosity of the people grew rapidly, and in such a measure that the Government, , the only issuer Of -tri e journal, found it- self obliged to issue a d ally. Some of these journals, 2,042 years after, a.re still in existence. The name of the journal was Acta Poindi Romani Diurna and e.ppeared daily either on tablets hung out in public, or the con- tents written with red chalk on.the walls of the houses. The contents were sim- ply news; from the want of the neces- sary material, political articles were not to be had. Nevertheless, according to the Roman Government, it was a true jouraal, and intended as reading matter for the public, which might also be in- ferred from the fact that the archives of the State were carved. in bronze and in- accessible to the public. Here is a ver- bal translation from the oldest journal known, issued 186 years before the birth of Christ: f‘ Consul 4Sioinius was the acting judge to day There was &heavy thunderstorm and the lightning split an oak at the foot of the hills of Veil: In a hostelry, at the foot of the hills of Janus, there Was a fight in -which the are Anode to perform the moet surprising feats; tiny coffee -mills, cv- hich grind reel berries, and patent perfume diffusers, which can be made to do day as.disin- tectauts ; all the most likely ;and all the most unlikely things to comelrorri such a manufactory, turned out in hundreds and thonsanda every day, to suit the pampered taetes of the rising geueration. —.N.
