Mr Cooper re loved the papers from the

Many people, otherwise humane, appear
to imagine that a box on the ears is a
light punishment, specially adapted to
the construction of .young children. They
also appear to,think---at least they act as
if they thought—that- the projection of
the outer ears suggests ear -pulling as a
modifieLl form of punishinent. The
same persons, who will strike children
.violent blows on the head with the hand,
pen or closed, would think twice before
they struck with a cane or pointer the
utstretched hand of a child ;1 andthey
ight possibly object to a soiind flogging
dministerecl in old schoolboy fashion:
But, of the three naodes of punishment,
ie blow on the head is infinitely the
ost dangerous. The bones of a child's
head are much more capable of being in -
jived by a blow than are those of an ad-
ult person, and the ear itself is one of the
most delicate and most delicately organ-
ized parts of the whole human body. A
man would be considered .brilta,1 to bit a
child's eye so as to deprive him of sight, or
his nose so as to disfigurehim. It is no less
an injury to make a child cleat, or cause
injury to the brain„, or to give; rise to ab-
scesses in the ear, or to injure the outer
ear ---and all these are accidents not UTI,

and ear -pulling, as practiced. We are

have been the owner of some 25 colored
slaves, disposes of thein by giving one to
each of his children, of which he has 13

ne correct management of the nails
is to trim them to sn oval shape to cor-
respond with the contour of the fingers ;
but care should be taken never to let
them grow so long _as to be conspicuous,
nor yet too short, as they would cause
the tips of the fingers to become enlarg-
ed. and flattened, and give the hand, a
very ugly appearance, as is seen in the
fingers of those who are accustomed to
nibble at the nails, and keep them al-
most below the flesh. The skin which
grows in a semi -circle on the top of the
nail requires match attention, for it is of-
ten drawn on with its growth, dragging
the skin below the nail so tightly that
it divides into what are termed ragnails,
These can be prevented by separating
the skin from the nai.16 wirh a blunt,
half -circular instrument.- Many persons
eat this pellicle, but this should never
bet aerie, as it causes it to grow very
thick and uneven, and sometimes dam-
ages the growth of the nail. It is also
wrong :to prick un:ler thc nails with
sharp-liointed instruments, like the
point of` the scissors or peu-knife, for
this injures their aprrcaran ce. The nails
sh lids1 be kept perfectly clean, and
set ubbed witk a brush. not so stiff as to
hurt the skin, and the semi-eircular
"kali Cadl be pressed back with the towel
without touching the quick. If this
method is pursued daily, it will keep
them in proper order. If the nails are
badly .formed or ill -shaped, the ridges
should be scraped and. rubbed with a
lemon, and well dried. afterward ; yet if
the nails are of a very thin substance
it
would injure rather th a n improve them
to do this.

The case nf a pupil teacher who has
been charged with causing the death of a
boy through giving him a blow on the
side of his head, is one which has excited.
a considerable =aunt of interest. We
draw attention to the case, says a writer
in the Queen, with no idea of moralizing
either on the neeessity for corporal pun-
ishrnent or on its effect, or on the
tendencies of boys to be tyrannical, or on
the importance of keeping all corporal
punishment in the hands of the head
