that there is irid opportunity for cro-

l manner of uteresting and instructive
saes. For : i hour at least every even-
sag the studen should forget lessons en-
tirely, and, if possible, engage in some
activity that than, for the time, drive
them quite o'it: of the mind. Chess,
draughts, dominoes, parehesi, bund-
nisa's bluff, Copenha„ err, dancing, magic,.
music,. any apart that. is smote it and
rweating, should be indulged in. The
mind unbent in play, will, when direct-
' ` ea again to study, receive and retain
lrsatly more than if its tension is never
slackened. So, boys and girls, after sup-
per, and it should come early, have a
real good frolic before you begin the
study hcnr. Iron will feel all the bet-

We may; however, make the restraints

Children of larger and of Iessergrowth,

good at every meal, 365- days in every
year, but the ental diet must be varied;
we need( the fr it arid condiments of wit,.
mirth, fun, hu or, play, to keep the
brain in good working order, and its
secret pinions 'ell luhriicated. So these
lengthy e enin s let us bring out our in-

A SNAKE I_ • A RAu! ROAD.—A letter
frons Genesee the Syracuse Standard,
ander date of Sept. 24, relates the fol-
lowing : " Ye terday, on the train on
the Erie Railw y which runs from Roch-
ester to Dan vine, and reaches here
at 10 A.M., Its most singular circum-
stance occurred. When the train
was about three miles from this village,
the passengers in one of the coaches were
alarmed by the singular actions of a lady
who gave her name as Mary P. Rhoades,
of Adrian, Mich., and a relative of Rev.
C. T. Seibt, of Olean, N. Y. She was
leaning over a seat, uttering the most
piercing cries. A gentleman rushed to
her and asked the trouble. kihe made no
answer, but continued to scream the
louder. When the train reached this
village she was, helped into the waiting -
room, and a gehtlenian present procured
a glass of brandy, which -being given to
the lady, she appeared to recover some.
A lady standing near, at the juncture
gave a scream, and, pointing to the head
of Miss Rhoades, fainted. On examina-
tion a -large striped snake . was observed
coiled= aroi nd the chignon of the lady.
How it came there was a mystery, and
only excplainedby the theory that it had
got into the c4r, and took refuge under
the cushions ,of the car -seat. Miss
Rhoades stated she felt something craw-
ling up her heaei,. hut could only give
vent to her feelings in screams, and until
it was taken off, dict not herself know
what the matter was. The snake was
killed, and the affair produced no little
exciteni.ent'for- the time. -
How TO .CLEANSE KID GLavEs:--Take'
a little sweet milk and a piece of whites:.
or brown soap. Fold a clean towel three'•
or four times, spread it ovehyour dress,
and spread out the glove sloothiy ,upon
it. Take alar e piece of white flannel,
dip it into the milk, then rub it upon the
soap; andrub the glove doge;nward to-
ward the fingers, holding the -:wrist of it
by the Ieft hand. Continue this pro-
cess until the glove, i white, looks of a
dingy yellow, but if colored, looks dark
and entirely spoiled. Now Jet it dry,
and then put it on your hand, and it will
be soft, smooth, glossy and clean. Take
care, however, to omit no part of the
glove in rubbing it, and see that all the
soiled parts are thoroughly -cleaned. This
process applies only to white and colored
kid gloves. For black doves that are
soiled, turned white and otherwise in-
jured, take a tea -spoonful cif salad oil,
drop a few drops of ink into it, and rub
it all over the gloves with the tip of a
feather ; then Int them dry in the sun.
White kid boots and slippers can also he -
cleaned by the first process to look " as
good as new," and black kid boots and
slippers eau be restored to their pristine
gloss by the latter .method.
-----
CALUMNY.—The rales of politeness are
never at. variance with the principles of
morality. Whatever is really impelite is
really immera . We have no right to
offend peop-le with our manners or con-
versation:. We have iio right to deal
with, or to be influenced by gossip about
the people we ,meet. Their private af-
fairs are none of our business. If we be-
lieve a man to 'be unfit company for us,
We must not invite hirn., but if we meet
him where he has been invited by others,
we must treat him with civility.. If we
know a loan ar woman to be a grave of-
fender, we cannot use that knowledge to
injure. flim or her, 'u.rrleee it is absolutely
needful for the protection of otheis.' The
greatest and hest men in the world have
been assailed w=ith calumny, '1 he e urest
and noblest do not always escape it. We
cannot investigate—as a rule we must
disregard—all slanders. -Where great
offences become notorious, the offeiclers
roust be excommunicated. In all other
cases we must give every one the benefit
of a doubt ; apply charitable construc-
tions, nape for the beat, and consider
every ono innocent until lie is proven
guilty.- Hole to Bekaa%
11 eTERv 01 rn>r LAKES. —Lake Erie
is only ck or 70 feet, but Lake Ontario,
which is 592 feet iicep, is 230 feet below
the tale 1eVel of the ocean, or as low as
most parts of the Gulf of St. Lawrencere nee
,
and the
bottoms of Lakes Huron, Michi-
gan and Superior, although the surface is
much higher, are all, from their vast
depths, en a level with the bottom of On-
tario. Now, as - the discharge through
the River Detroit, after allowing for the
probable porton carried off by evapora-
tion, does not appear by any means equal
to the quantity of water which the three
upper lakes receive, it has been conjec-
tured that a subterranean river may run
from Lake Superior, by the Huron, to
Lake Ontario. This conjecture is not
improbable, and accounts for the singular
fact that salmon and herring are caught
in all the lakes communicatingwith the
St. Lawrence, t, but no " other. As the
Falls of Niagara must have always ex-
isted, it would
say how these
lakes without so
