We never knew more tan one man
who was always satisfied with - the
NS either at all times and un er all circuit -
stances. 1 It was Chubb; In summer,
when the thermometer bolt d up among
the nineties, Chubb would come to the
front door -with beads of perspiration
standing out all over his re face, until
his head looked like a r pberry, and
look at the sky and say, ' Splendid-
perfectly splendid ! Noble weather for
the washerwomen ! They cl n't shake up
any such weather as thes • in ;Italy.
Gimme My umbrella, Harriet, while I
sit oat yer on the . steps and Enjoy it."
In the winter when the mercury would
creep down 1.5' below zero, and the Gold
was severe enough to freeze the inside of
the globe, Chub -b: would sit on a fence
and exclaim, " By jingo ! dict you ever
see such ;weather as this ? like an at-
mosphere that
t-mosphere.that freezes up yoar very mar-
rer. It helps the coal -trade old keeps the
snakes quiet. Don't talk; of summer
time to me. Gimme cold, and give
it to me stiff." When there was a
drouth, Chubb used to meet us in the
street and remail', No rain. yet, I see
maggniticent, ain't it ? I want my weath-
er dry , I want it with the dampness
left out. Moisture breeds fever and
ague, and wets your clothes. If there's
anything I despise, it's - to carry ail mu-
brella. No rain for me if you please."
While it rained fort a week and swamped
the country, Chubb often dropped in to
see us, and to observe, " I dunno how
you fed about this yer rain, but it alLus
seems to ene that heaven never ' drops no
blessings but when we have '. a long wet
spell. ft makesethe corn jump, and
cleans the sewers. I wouldn't give , a
cent to- live in a country where there was
no rain. Put me on the_ Nile, and NI
die in 'a week. Soak me' through and
through to the inside of my undershirt,
and I feel as if life Inas bright and be
tiful, and sorrow nothing but uonsensp'.
Chubb was always happy in .a thunder-
storm. "Pat me in a thunderstorm and
let the lightnin' play round me, and I'n
at hone. I'd rather have one storm
that'.d tear the ..inside out of the conti-
nent than a thousand years of little drib-
11lia', waterin'-pot showers. rf . I can't
have a rippin' and a roarin' storm .I don't
want none{." One day Chubb ' was upon
-his roof fi:tinga shingle, when a tornado
struck Kirin, lifted him aff, carried him a
quarter: of a mile, and dashed him with
such terrible ' force against. a fence that
his leer' was broken. As they carried
hien home we met him, and when we
asked him how he felt, he opened his
eyes, aild laughingly said, " Immortal.'
