Canadian Salt. The Buffalo CozFier says that notwith- standing the heavy duty, find the com- petition of the Onondaga, Salt Coin- pany, considerable quantities of Canadian salt are imported and sold at Buffalo and various points on the frontier from Ogdensburg to Chicago?, ineludiug both of these cities. It says : -Six or seven years ago several strata strongly impreg- nated with salt, and below that a vast deposit of the purest reek mineral itself, were discovered in Canada on the shores of Lake Huron. The - same formation has since been found to extend through Seeforth, Clinton and Kincardine --a dire tante of 75 miles in an air line—and at all these places, as well as at Goderich, the manufacture of the best quality of salt is now in successful operation. The discovery itself was accidental, and is in- teresting. It was supposed oil might be obtained near Goderich, and a sanguine operator bored some 700 feet into the earth with, the `'hope of finding it. He exhausted his capital, but :at this crisis the Corporation of Goderich and a land company, having special interests.in this subject, came to his 'relief, and -advanced ample -substantial aid en condition of his extending his researehee to the depth of 1,000 feet. This being Fdone,She reached what is probably the becl of an ancient sea, the waters of which were evaporated by intense heat, leaving an, absolutely inexhaustible supply. of salt for the fu- ture use of mare Thsi brine obtained from this source is, when not pumped too rapidly, but left to attain its natural strength, thoroughly saturated with this indispensable article: The breadth of the deposit is not yet ascertained, but its extent is already known to be so vast that land underlaid by it commands no additional price on that account, and monopoly is practically impossible. The result is exceedingly beneficial to the Canadians." t C - ARRIAGES; lizoKSL—Iii.Nox.---At the resic Thos lnl11Ds, Esq.
