SEPT. 4, 1874. mummiamr'' The Average Prayer -Meeting. The prayer -meeting constitutes so im- portant a part of the Ohristia.n aocral life in this country, and is so much a thing of:the people that it jis legitimately a topic for, the examinati n and discussion of laythati. –We pprOach the subject with abundant reI ere ce for the time- honored estimate clf itj usefulness, and only with a wish for the advancement of its efficiency as aiij ag nail for spiritual culture. That it is in any respect the boon that it should be, to the hundreds of thousands who attend upon and par- $ ticipate in its exerc ses, no one pretends. That it is the Iainest and most nearly im- potent of any of t a4encies enaployed by the church, in perhaps two cates out of every three, is evident to all. Let ini see if we can pres at la fair picture of the average prayer- eeeting. , In & church of, say two hundred and fifty members, there is an average atten- dance of fifty pereo is. These ar made i up, solai. as the men are concerned, of the principal chum ±cials—th dea- 0 cons, elders, &c. Th remaind r are women—the best y‘ ornejn of the c urcli, and such of their families as they an in- duce. to accompany, the:The lergy- mam overworked, ad eliscoura.g d by the small number in att ndance; is there to lead. He gives'at his, hymn, prays, reads the Scriptures, and, with a f w re- marks, "throws op et Vie meetil g " to the laymen for pr yer1 or exhor tion. • There is a, long per od of silence. The deacons, who suspe t that their voices have been. heard to o4n, or t they may be in the wa .of others, emain silent. At last, either one. of thein • called upon by the aast ror some poo , j rises and utters, as isve as he can, th man, under the spur of a, sense of duty words of a prayer. Eve ybody sees tha •, he is in a struggle, and t at he is so littl at home that he is ort y xious of gettin through without be aki ' a dOW11., Th alldiellCC is of cows , s inpathctiO, and instead of is, led4 pr y er,,becoraes a anxious for him as he is f r himself. An so, with long pate es f embarrassin and. painfal silence intterspersed _ wit dreary platitudes o jprayer and speech, unrefreshing and. lac -1n spontaneity to a sad degree, the meti4 goes on to the end, which conies W eu the chapel clock shows that an hour h been spent 'n the service. To suppose that any grea goo comes from the spthng of an hew i this way, is to offer an in tilt to conam, o sense. 1, It would be instritetie e, if the, facts could be ascertained, to 1now how man of those who attend the average ia ayer meeting do so becaus they truly deligh in it e how many bec use they w h to stand by ancl encoura e t eir pasto , and how Many because hey think it is, o may be, their duty. It •=ould. also e in structive, if the facts cou d be asce ain ed, to know how 711 ny men are kep away by the fear of ein called u on to engage actively in th exe cises, anc how many remain at horn be ause they have learned_ by experienc that the av rage prayeremeeting is a d ea place to eary men—one which. bore withoutbenefiting . them. We fear that if he facts were known as they relate to tl ese two p intsi the . a,vera,ge prayer -a eetng weal find itself in very sorry st ding. 'Wile men go to a religious m eting, of an sort, they -go to he reinforc d, or refresh d, or instructed. How m eh of any ne of these objects can be realized in s ch a meeting as we hav described ? How much, of the still hig ff object of spon- taneous, joyous wors ip an be se tired, . by listeniug to the p infu blunder g of som.e pious- and con cien ious lay an? • Is it not true that .t1 e a erage p ayer- meeting is .a. sad_ mopkery of bot Goa • and man ? el i Can it be possible that the Al . ighty Father of us all is -plesed with an offer- ing so little spontanedus, So far fro a joy- ous, so painful in it •exercises, a d 'so unprofitable in its cot nsels as this. If, once a week, a whole thee ch would come together joyfully, an si g their ongs, and, pray their pray rs, nd speak their thoughts, and COMMU e w th one a other 1 on the great topic w iich 'absorbs hem, i that Would be a meeting iworth halving. : But how would such a meeting coMpare with the dead drag of the average ptayer- meeting ? It would c nap re as life; coin- ' pares with death, a be uty with de fermity. So utterl va, neless, to all human apprehensiOn arIe the prayer - meetings carried_ on by oine churches, that it may well be ques ioned whether they are not rather a 1clettiment than an advantage, a harm rather than. a help, to the regular work of the pastors, and . the spiritual prosperity of thotie *whom they lead and teach. There is something to 'be said for the layman in this conaection, •which will leave his piety =impugned. In the first place he labors at an absorbing em- _ ployment. He goes tO th meeting ut- terly weary, and without the slightest preparatioa of heart Or brain for any ac- tive participation in -ts xercises. • He 1 needs help, and does iaot eel capable of offering any. He is &parity Of his vitality, and needs to be refreshed, and dive ted from the currents of hou Us in which histrade or profession old him. Again, as a rule, he is unused. to public speeeli of any sort. It is impcssible for him. to lose the consciousness that he is speak- ing ; -and, becoming c itical upon him- self, his spontaneity, and ' all the ood that comes of it, arc ost. He sink to his seat at last, humbled into the du t in the conviction that he has b en eagage lin a performance, in regard to v -hose Sue ess or failure he feels either g atifieettio. or mortified pride.
