ground with all its contents on Friday
last Mr. McCrostie had been plowing

wheat just threshed. Stable &c., went -

TEacHERS' INSTITUTE. —T e second'
raeeting of the Dungannon; Teachers'
Institute, lately organized by Inspector
7. R.. Miller, was heldin the Selaool
House of that place. Owing to the in-
different announcement and. the absence
of the Inspector, who is President of the,
Institute, as well as some of the teadh-
ers who intended to take part in the
proceedings, the meeting was very small
in numbers, and amounted to—. a fizzle.
A. Warning to Smokers ---A. Bad
Fix.
Some few days ago, a prominent medi-
cal gentleman of the town of Lindsay,
was driving in the country on his pro-
fessional rounds, when, after having en-
joyed a comfortable smoke, he put his
lighted pipe into his vest pocket, setting
• fire to the garment. The horse becom-
ing unmanageable, he eouldi not hold
him and put the fire out, whidh now ex-
tended to his coat, nor could he subdue
the fire without letting the horse go.
So along the road. comet -like he sped,
until a fortunate pull of the reins brought
the horse up against a boardlifence, and:
the buggy into the ditch„ which :,,•topped
bis locomotion. The blazing Medico, by
stripping off what garments sere left on
him, succeeded in getting the fire ex-
tinguished, though at the expense of a
blistered skin; singed hair and a fine
• coat, vest arid' trousers destroyed, of
coarse. To go into the toast in. that
classical condition, was out Of I the ques-
tion, so he patched_ up -his gaimente as
well as possible, turning some of the
most badly burnt 'under him, pad wait...
hag patiently until darkness covereclshis
nakedness, he quietly drove hitt; town—
" a sadder but a wiser man."
• A PECULIAR STRIEE.—A strange sort,
of strike is now going on in London
among the linen draper's assistants.
Next to to the early closing system, they
are most devoted to the mustache move-
ment, which " grows upon. them " (as is
natural) naOre and more. But their em-
ployers have, very . foolishly, set their
faces against mustaches, and the order
has gone forth for their young men to
"shave or leave." Nothing has happen-
ed like it since Peter the Great issiaed
his ukase against beards, and it has pro,
vokecl-a similar insurrection. Themasters
could not subdue their men, and yet they
were too obstinate to. give Way to them -
so this curious compromise. has, at all
events, in many great establishments,
been entered into—the asaistants were to
appear on a certain morning clean shaved,
but with permission for the future,. to
grow their mustaches. Perhaps' the em-
ployers hoped that the intermediate stage
of " stubble " would be shriiiik from,
but oar counter-jumpere-ale intrepid, and
they are gradually Assertmg their inde-
pendence—by hair breadths.
