THE DOO 11 ED MAN,
A
It Is the good ship Hildebrand
That sails the stormy sea—
Buther course .doth stand away from
land,
No danger can there be.
Though the tempest blow, and the wild
waves flow,
The ship is stout and strong;
And safely to the pert will go,
Let the voyage be short or long.
" Come, tell a story of the seas,"
A comrade asks the master ;
" With this gallant -breeze, you may rest
in ease,•
._ The sea -mew flies not faster."
"Then fill the glasses all around,"
The well -pleased mastercries,
"And I'll tell what is found in a ship
that is bound,
To no port till the Iast Man dies.
"There floats a ship in the Northern
clime,
That has drifted a Hundred years ;
For a fearful crime, till the end. of time,
A fated mail it bears.
"U,Tpon the deck, and on t e mast,
The ever -falling spray
Is borne by the blast, and freezes fast
Till the ship is an icebe g gray.
"And in the cabin, ale a d wan,
Between two spec res g im,
Sits a fated man, while t ey strive who
can
Gain the troubled oul o hint.
And one plays for ;the find of hell,
And one redeems from stn,
And the dice they tell as they 'fall from
the shell ;
But neither yet shall win.
" And ever there the dice are cast,
For the fated man € to see ;
Until the last of earth is -past,
He sits in agony.
" Long years ago I once did_ sail
Fat into the frozen. North,
And I heard a hail, like a dying wail,
From the drifting Ship come forth :
"Upon the deck, and on the mast,
The ever -falling spray
Was borne by the blast, and frozen fast ;
Like au iceberg huge she lay :
" ` Oh, tell me does the end draw near ?
And when will time be done ?'
There many. a year he has watched in
fear, - t
While his soul is lost and won."

GAIETIES
An Oswego, paper describes a fire by
saying that "the red flames danced in
the heavens and flung their fiery arms
about like a funeral pall until Sam Jones,
Esq., the governor, got on the roof, and
doused them out with a pail of water."
—A German `in New York being asked
how mach saner- kraut he had put up foi
winter use, replied, "II'se not much little
more as ten barrels, shust for -sickness.
—A country boy having heard of sail
ors heaving up anchers, wanted to know
if it was sea -sickness that made them
do it.
—A young man was recently on his
trial in Pennsylvania for stealing nitro-
glycerine. He dserves a good blow-
ing -up.
—Rooted sorrow—Anaching tooth.
—A Cincinnati physican was absurd
enough to take some of his own medicine.
The coroner's fee was $10.
—" Kissing your sweetheart," says a
trifling young man," is like eating soup
with a fork ; it takes a long time to get
enough."
—One of " our young girls," at an exam-

asked why the noun " bachelor " was
singular, blushingly answered : "Because
it is very singular theydon't get mar-
ried." She went, up to the head, -

Prince Edward's Island.
A correspondent of the Buffalo Com-
mercial, who has been making a summer
tour in Prince Edward's Island, closes
a series of descriptive letters asp follows':
Let me say good-bye to our friends of
Prince Edward's Island, andadd that a
more hospitable set Of people it was Bev-
er my lot to be cast among ;. and •I would
recommend to our citizens;, if they want
a pleasant trip next !summer, that they
cannot do better than to take the trip I
have described, taking in Halifax, if
possible. It is an inexpensive trip com-
paratively. The living is good; and the
country picturesque and beautiful. The
representative men of the i Dominion are
a very bright, able; set ! of men—the
Yankee improved upon. They are "well
up" in everything, and fully alive to the
wants and. interests; of !their common..
country. Speculation hats not warped
or destroyed their better judgment by
selfish influences of personal interest. I
was particularly struck with their cour-
teous demeanor towards leach other in
debate and social intercourse. The pres-
ent .form of the Dominion :Government is
quite Liberal_ and Well adrninistefed. ;-
the people are satisfied artd pleased with
it. Canada is fast acquiring wealth and
prosperity under its workings. Com-
mercially and financially they are highly
prosperous. Were I 'living in Canada I
should not want annexation with the
! United States. A good liberal treaty of
Reciprocity, made to, meet the' wants of
both peoples, its details suggested by
,praetical, competent Gruen subject to be
altered and amended ' as the years pro-
gressed, and the necessity of mutual
changes should Geeta, would, in my
opinion, be far better than annexation.
With these relations ;let competition be
open, and it Will better develop the best
interests otff both countries. Our Can-
adian brethren, as I understand them,
will make good neighbors and good
friends. For one, I Dope so see a liberal,
practical commercial :bone_ betweenthe
two countries in full operation at no dis-
tant day.

Y TIER PLAN DIDN' T Wont.—The
Pottsville, Penn., Miners' Journal is re-
sponsible for the following story : A
Ph(enixville maid, quite old, becoming
anxious about her matrimonial chances,
recently concocted a plan to deceive a
young fellow as to her age. This was
the way she tried it:: The old family ,
• Bible contained a faithful record of all
• births, marriages and deaths. This vol-
ume the maiden .took to her chamber,
and selecting the birth page, she man-
aged by dint of scratching and writing to
change the date of her birth to a period
11 years later than what it .had legiti-
mately been recorded.* Then the Bible was
placed on the sitting room table in a con-
spicuous manner. That evening came
along the lover. He scon began to ling-
er the Bible pages and finally reached
the birth record, where and when he
discove ed,.to his surprise, that hi An-
gelina as just one year younger than
he. H thought it strange as she a pear
ed • older. Next he began readin the
death list, and made the very Mt nish-
ing discovery that the: radiant m iden,
aceordiig to the Bible, had.actuall been
born 1 years after the decease f her
father. The young man quietly arose
and; bid Angelina good -by, andnowswears
that ' e ernal'vigilance is indeed th price
of liberey.'
