Wonderful Running Peas.
The recent pedestrLan feats bring to
mind some exploits of the once famous
John Grindall, in his time the fleetest
runner in the world. Grindall was boria
of Scotch parents in Mulberry street,
New York, on. the 28th of IVIarch, 1825.
His father, a capable, well-to-do taxider-
mist, tried. to interest and educate the
boy in his own. calling, but signally fail-
ed. The boy was then bound to a Wash-
ington Market butcher, and with the
other butcher boys of the market he at-
ta,cliedahimself to the old. Fire Depart-
ment, soon becoming known as the swift-
est of ail the firemen.
At length his iemarkable speed and
endurance led to a challenge to run three
miles against tirae on the Union track of
Long Island for a purse of $50. He won
by several minutes, easily accomPlishing
the prescribed. distance in 17 nainutes
and. 16 seconds. A few years 'later the
glories of Mme. Franconi's Hippodrome
dawned on New York, and among the
attractions offered were foot races, open
to all contestants, the victors to be
awarded sums ranging from. $75 to $250
gold. Grinds:11 and. John Barlow, a
lation was " Free Stone," and who was
believed by many to be the cham.pion
one or five mile runner, were the most
conspicuous aspirants for success in the
first of these contests. Barlow came in
ahead of the whole field, Grindall includ-
ed, and. was exuberant. His triumph
ended, however, with the next race, for
Gaindall distanced him an even mile.
boon afterward Mr. Stetson, proprie-
ter of the Howard Athenaeum, Boston,
and editor of a sporting newspaper, in-
vited any person to run against him for
the charapionship of the world. .
Grindall went to Boston with his back -
ere, and signed. the engagement fdr a ten-
-mile match with Mr. Stetson. - The
Cambridge track was selected. . The race
day, the 22d of May, arrived, and. 20,-
000 persons assembled to enjoy it. The
edds were 100 to 40 in Stetson's favor,
awl betting active. The racers toed the
scratch side by side, and. at the eignal
they rushed. off sinniltaneously.
S-110 CLLER TO SHOULDER, .
the first mile was run in 5ro . 13s. Bet-
ters still baaked Stetson to the extent. of
100 to 70: On the second mile Grindall
ran ahead, and retained the lead. until
the seventh mile, -when he paused to
drink some water which his trainer hand-
ed him. Stetson darted on and was sev-
eral paces in advance wlen Grinclall
teak to his legs again. At the .begin -
Mug of the next quarter Grinclall spurt-
ed and pushed befol'e Stetson. On the
eighth mile Grindall, obeying his back-
ers, who feared that he n3ight be Imock-
ed down, made a -wide interval between
Ilia rival and himself.. On the ninth mile
Grindail led Stetson by a quarter of a
mile. This gap was unbroken to the
end, and Grinclall was proclaimed win-
ner. Tirne--I56na. 5is., He was -given
the belt of champion, of the world.*
Soon aftervvard. Grandall Met Stetson
again in a five -mile race for $250 -a side.
It proved a -victory for Grindall. Time,
28m, 45is. In another, similar in dis-
tame, Stetson was allowed 60 yards ad-
vantage at the start, but Grindall won.
