tians to ehauge the ancient pxlactiee of
their ancestors. This is someth ng which
must be borne in mind in all di CUSS1One
of the subject, but Sir Henry Thompson
makes no allusion to it.
In his essay, Sir Henry cons_ders the
question from two points of vie, (1) that
of utility or the interest of et 1,
e entire
community, and (2) ;that of . sentiment,
He argues that graveyards poisop the air,
(.,
the earth and the waters, produ e a vast
amount of disease in the ev- rld, and
must, in time, imperil the very . xistence
of the human race. In supPort of this
,
idea, he offers an array of facts, drawn
from British experience, and. ii • reason
jug about them, displays his ' scientific
skill and logical ingenuity. -Pa , in our
opinion, his arguments ou this p int were
invalidated iunnediately after, he pub--
lication of his essay, when the were ta-
ken up by Dr. Holland, the Me lical In-
spector of Therials for England a d 'Wales,
who spoke from full knowledge nd. care-
ful study of the subject. The ,,entimen-
tal portion of Sir 'Henry's es- y deals
with the disagreeable feature of our
present system - of burial ; bi - thoett
this point, it is only necessar to say
that anybody who thinks of he pro-
cesses of cremation will find hem far
more disagreeable to the imagin tion.
The publication of Sir Hem: 's views
in London was followed by awi e -spread
discussion in the British press a id. in the
scientific societies. But the eight of
argument was greatly i against im ; and
when he attempted to reply ' to his ad-
versaries, he ex.posed. .tli.e wealtn ss of the
• materials out of which he had nilt his
opinions. His essay was transl ted into.
all the languages of Europe ; an , in, some
,contineutal countries, it has roduced
more practical results than i did in
Great Britain. It not only 1d many
German and French means to c eclare m
favor of cremation; but it ha.. led the
authorities in several cities am distriets
of Austria and Switzerland to. establish
regulations permitting the peop e to , ex-
ercise the right of choice bet ecu in-
humation and cremation., in t4 disposal
of their dead. We have not e et heard
of the erection of the necessary unlaces,
or of the carrying out of the c smation-
ary practice, in any locality, but we
need not doubt, since authority for them
has been given, that such th ngs may
yet be done.
The " movement" • in favor f crema-
tion on this side of the water, Inch has
thus far been mainly confined to New
York, was beeem soon after Si Henry's
essay had been republished h re. One
.of the daily papers, the Woric , gave a
great deal of attentioh to th subject,
worke(i it up as a "new sense ion," and
recounted day after day, the rgunients
of the cremationist advocates—classical
and sanitary. A good. man people,
mestly of the scientific class, began to
give in their adhesioe to the' ew idea,
and to enroll- their names, in th columns
of the Trofld, as supporters of t. Some
time ago it was proposed hat they
should erganize or the purpose of giving
praetical effect to their doctrii, e, and so
it happens that the 'r Crematioy Society"
of New York has been -formed with of-
ficers, cemmittees, and a direc object in
view. The society made its ti st public
appearance one night last. eve k, in the
hall of the Young Men's. Christian As-
sociation. We looked in at ti e meeting
for a few minutes. . It was ne very for-
midable in size, but a good meny well-
-known people were to be sc en there.
Spee.,hes were delifered; th ordinary
lousiness of ;such meetings was transact-
ed ; the dremationary party formally
took the field ; and things we -c put in
order for prosecuting- the work. It was
proposed that the members of ie society
should. be required to prouns, to mak-e
provision for their, own cremation as
soon as they "shuffled. off ths mortal
coil." But this proposition, b- ilia as yet
impracticable, was ' not adop 1 ed. .The
present besiness of he creme iouists is

SEWINC MACHINE DEPARTMENT.
I take pleasure in stating to the public, that I
ehall at all times have a stoek of all the different
kinds of Sewing Machines, with their varied pre-
tentione to merit, that the purchasers may be able
to suit themselves at one establishment, without
inconvenience. The whele bee of the country
has been, and still- is, frequented by transient
persons. My object is to eaution the public
against buying anything but Standard Machines, -
and of Regular Established Agents, who can al-
ways be found, and whose warrant and gearantee
can be relied on, and if the purcheser is not suited
with the kind theythink they want, they can have
the piitilege cnanging it for any other. We
have at all times a, new and fresh stock of the
Florence and. Webeter Mathinee, as well as all the
other standard meles, which um be paid for on
very easy terms, or if not satisfactory, can be
changed for any ether that may be desired.
