Vallee of Dlffcrfli ilEiada of Dogs.
A delicate face, with with, aerie Eve eyes
looking up from t 6 dark cellar at pass-

and lustrous, std.their ownerig a black-.

legs, shut up in a cge in the doorway of
the cellar of ar d g -fancier. He looks,
very mounful, indeed, as he niffs the
pure air entering from above.* Could he
speak he would pre eably.deliv a touch-

His aspect, howeve , sufficient y attests

insidious appeal co id find exp ession in
words.
Close . beside the entrance, aiid at the
head of the steps 1 ading into tihe cellar,
stands. a ferocious a cimen of

noted for his ferocity in the slums of the
City, and has been so adroitly , stuffed
and placed upon a pedestal that it is
necessary to look twice to discover the
deception. Passing the grim guardian
and the sad -faced tearier, one finds him-
self in a large, square- basement,! the floor
of which is covered with saw -dust, and
here and there are saw -dusted protuber-
ances, which upon closer inapection,
prove to be bone; well gnawed, and
lamps of hard food.
THIS IS A XENA ERIE OF DOGS.
• There are cages ujou each si e of the
room, extending to the ceiling, and in
these are canines of every size, fbrm, die-
pneition. and race. Some, which the
cages will not hold, are tied to rings in
the floor, and others, ick with the vari-
ous ills dog's flesh is eir to, are curled
up in boxes or .bas ets. There is a
strong, rank smell, which strikes the
specks here and ther, , skippin in the
nostrils far from 'ag eeably, arid black

that will defy any respectable or responsible office
to cut under. •
Intending insurers will note: That this is the
only Fire Mutual that has deposited with the Re-

throughout the Dbminion of Canada. That the
asaete and profits otthis Company accumulate at
the members' credit, affording a sure fund for the
