A CHAPTER OE Acononerrs.-A few
days ago two men and. a boy, who had
been swamping, were returning home
from their 'Work, and. as they had a yoke.
of oxen the two men -walked_ on before,
leaving the boy to drive the oxen. On
the way they met a horse team, which
was going so fast the oxen had to go
off the track, and the road being very
narrow, one of the oxen fell into a deep
hole. The man with the horse team
drove on, and never looked behind, him.
The boy had the presence of mind to un-
yoke the oxen and then ran and called
lustily to the two men ahead, who came,
and in their exertions to extricate the
ox, one of them fell in along with the
animal, up to the neck in water, and mad.
As they were, not far from a saw mill,
the boy ran and got a fresh supply of
men to get out the man and the ox.
When he and. they arrived, one of the
men was so zealous in. his efforts that he
shared. the same fate as the man and the
ox, failing into the slough with them.
The two in the mud then got a hold of
the ox, and with the aid of those on dry
land placed him on terra firma once
more. Then the two men,, having been
helped out, made the best of their way
home threatening vengeance on the per-
son who drove the horse team, and say-
ing they would never give that man any
more than half the road. in futhre.--Com.
