The Late Contest.
To the Editor of the Huron Expositor.
Sx*: An article appeared in your last
:issue, over the signature -of Onlooker,"
in which the writer swells Jnm'dli to the
-utiniast proportiOns of his self-importance,
rn an attempt to injure the Council, and
mysQf in particular, and calls loudly on
me to explain certain matters when he
haft my word that. I woulcl not answer
any more anonymous communicatione,
being assured that it is not the interests
of the munieipality that any persen seeks
i.. who is ashamed or afraid. to give his
name. Like .all cowards who ,delight M
dealing a ,blow in the dark, he took good.
care that no person should have the
• chance of replying, by choosing the last
issue of the paper for his foul abuse.
• He evidently feels slighted. • For an anti-
clote, I would refer him to the ltetuining
officer's books. Perhaps he ina,y fin
'consolation in perusing their pages.
would advise him to keep from despoil-
'deney. till we get incorporated into a
town, then the electors may have pity
en him ancl give him aeeeat in the happy
family circle. It is gratifyiner to the
Council to know that, in spite of the
sophistry . of a •Darwin, •or the false
reasoning of a Tom Paine, that they have
been upheld by-sucb overwhelming ma-
jorities. It is not the first instance on
record where good has resulted where
evil -web intended. Now, as the election
is over, I hope that, instead of hostilities,
we sha:11 have peace; and, that those who
have for the past two Months devoted -
themselves to tiae overthrow of the Coun-
cil, will now tarn over •a new leaf and
uphold their hands, while_ they honestly
try to work for the best interests of the
Municipality, and I expect that eacb of-
ficer will so acquit himself in the per-
formance of his duty that, .shoulcl he
ever seek re-election from the elector's of
Seaforth, he -will fare as the members of
-the old Council did yesterday. Seeing,
Mr. Editor, that the falsity of the accuse -
tions brought against the Council have
been established at the polls yesterda,y, I
shall not again trespass ou your time
with those matters.

BALL AND StrPFER.—Splendici weather,
eecellent sleighing, first class music and,
a popular host, brought together at
tfranbrook On Thursday evening last
one of the largest and happiest assem-
blies that ever gathered to trip the light
fantastic in that vicinity. About 100
different couples were on the floor during
the evening. .It was a decided success.
Latimer furnished the music. Tuck

neeful, because it was to be iem by the
Way of •Clinton. Mr. •Dickson at the
time appeared irirtated, and may be did.
not, as is lisped witil him,: duly weigh
his words: At the time, I deemea it
improper to introduce personal affairs
into a public meeting of that kind, and
allowed his aecusation to go uncontra-
dieted. ; but, as the meeting was large,
all parts of the township being repre-
eented, perhaps *oil will be kind enough
to allow me a space in your columns, to
make a denial of the charge and explain
the position I, witb many other rate-
payers on this side Of the township, took
en this said railroad scheme. Th.e first
railroad bonus submitted to the taxpay-
ers of Tuckeramith -Was for an Mdepen-

tind SucCessfully opposed; and the whole
scheme of a narrow gauge roadwas aban-
i
cloned. A 'proposition afterwards was
Made that the Great Western should
build and run a broad gauge line if -the
municipalities interested granted aid at
the rate of $4,000 per mile. A depute -

words would mvolve an extra outlay of
over a quaTter of a million of clonal's, and
a less return of prolit. He earnestly

favorable light we could before the Lou-

indace them -to alter the intended line of

they did so, the Great -Western woad
have nothing further to say to it. We

which. we promised to use our hest en-
deavors to secure sufficient bonuses, and

into a proper agreement en the terms
already stated, -Tuckeremith might be
induced to grant a sum of $15,000. The
London, Huron e and Bruce directors
thought fit to reject the proposals inade,
for reasons !best known to themselves

a simple statement of facts, in connection
with which I feel I have nothing to re-
