Farmer Woodsom's Trap. . -
Old farmers Wobdsom was about
as mean an individual as one would
} likely to meet in a lifetime. He
never let anything go to waste on
his farm, and he was never
known Co give anything willingly
away. The village . school house
stood about a quarter of a mile
from his place, and this was a
source of great anxiety to him, as
the boys in • going to and from
school, were often tempted to turn
aside and gather the fruit from un-
der an early apple tree which grew
on one side of his garden. Now as
old Woodson' always collected the
apples from off the ground himself,
and mixed them with the sound
ones, it made him very ' angry to
find the boys helping themselves.
He tried various ways to drive off
the youngsters, but they only laugh-
ed at him, and finally rowing lbold-
er, frequently , made idnigh t- ex-
cursions to the old tree. But at
last Woodsom hit on a plan which
seemed to please him. So -he at
once set to work to put it in execu-
tion. Tat evening at dusk he slug
a large hole about six feet deep,
making the sides very steep ; from
this hole he laid a trough through
the yard to a large tank which stood
at the door of the kitchen, and
which was always kept filled with
water. He took particular care to
dig the hole directly across the path
which led under the e pple tree, and
covering it completely up with
leaves and grass, laying a long strip
of hickory across the middle, to
which he attached a stout twine,
fastening the other"_end of the cord
to a. large tin disli,1 which he hung
on a nail at the kitchen door. Af-
tersmiling grimly to himself over
the completion of his work,. lie re-
turned to the house, and gave his
wife strict injunctions to immediate-
ly pull out the plug from the - tank
the moment she heard the clatter of
the: falling tin. I
in the direction of the village. The
next morning Woodsom refilled the
trap with more solid material than
water, but he olid not hear the last
of% that confow>ided trap for many
years after.

name of the Monster's Table. All
those unfortunate persons, who live

ities come here to dine together, and
avoid the attention they would at-
tract elsewhere. The skeleton man

are excluded from this symposium ;
so are strangers, and it is said that in-
truders have met with such a warm
reception from the hideous slfapes as-
sembled around the board, that they
felt,,. -on making " their escape, as
though they had just been released
from' one of the circles of Dante's
" Inferno." , The French journal
whiyh describes the dreary assembly
adds sortie information not gen-
erlly known." These monstrosi-
ties, it observes, " are seldom natu-
ral, but are the woik of ' English
Specialists,' who tuin out these sad
spectacles to order at the bidding of
mercenary parents. This revelation
ought to produce national humilia-
tion, mortification and prostration, if

But alas, for poor Woodson' ! a
pair,of bright 'eyes were watching
him from behind the trunk of' a
neighboring tree, during the whole
operation, and no sooner was the
farmer's back turned than the own
er of those eyes darted toward the
village and quickly returned with
. all the boys he could muster, all de-
termined to see- some fun.
" So ne - intended to' give us a
tumble and a cola -water bath in the
bargain!" exclaimed Tom, one of
the boys. "Now we'll see if we
can't beat ' him at his own game.
Just come here and help me to knot
• this grass, and we'll astonish him."
Ina shoat time the boys had the
long grass which grew at each: "side
of the path Securely knotted in sev-
eral places directly across : the path,
and then they went for the apples,,
purposely making a great deal - of
noise.
Old Woodsom soon became
aware that some one was at - the ap-
ple tree, so hes softly opened.: -the
door, and waited for the springing
of the trap ; but, of course he listen-
ed in vain. Finally, getting impa-
tient, he started on a run for the
boys,, shouting and gesticulating
violently. But the young. rascals
paid no attention to his cries, which
only exasperated hila the more.
He had at first taken a round-
about course, intending to head the
boys off, but he now came on at full
tilt down the very, path which lecl
into the trap. Woodsom was no
light weight—he had turned . the

Address n T. DAVIS,
282-13
It may: be well enough to send
one's children to France to be edu-
cated, but it is embarrassing for a
man to go over there to - visit his
family and find himself under the
necessity of taking lessons in French
before he can talk with his own
children. A Boston •man lately had
this experience, and it ought to
teach him the folly of sacrificing a
'knowledge of his own language and
country - fez foreign acquisitions;
There is little patriotism in thus ed-
ucating one's children.
