Perhaps the most remarkable ma,n in
the Reuse of Commons is the leader of
the Opposition, <Alexander Mackenzie.
For my taste there is somewhat too
much of alack of mode about him. I
am partial- to an eye -glass !myself, and
have a weakness for kid gloves. A 11 the
literary characters about Ottawa are the
same, especially tb e big ones, and ittelle,

when a well-dressed. man sticks an eye-
glass on his optic, and stares aboat him,
teethe staie be ever so idiotic, the action
has a considerable effect. It is indicat-

wear a ring. Nevertheless, blackenzie
is in more respects than one the most re-
markable man in the House. He has

dignity and elevation of character. The
scandalous stories about his dissipations
which are circulated from time to time
are simply falsehoods.
HE IS NOT, IN ANY SENSE,
dissipated or loose in its habits His
private life is reputable enough. and if
he was only a private gentleman, a -young
fellow who bad inherited shoddy or come
into a pork butcher's fortune, there
might be nothing to say against him.
Considering what the genal run of
princes has hitherto been; for a young
prince not to be actually' vicious is per-
haps a good- deal. The people are more
exacting than they used to be, and they
are certainly disappointed. They think
that a MAU in a high position Should
try- to cariy himself highly, and not
ma,ke it too conspicuout. that he is only
a very common sort of person, a mere
eating and (hinting machine, with no
object in life except mere amusement,
and with tastes that carry bira toward

generally, are beconetag too wide awake
to leave valuables in their hale& so that
it is scarcely worth while for enterprising
burglars to go to the trouble of blowing
them open.
