There is many a reit in thetoad of life,
If we only would stop to take it,
4.knd many atone froni the better land, -
If the querulous heart would wake it !
To the sunny soul that is ftill of hope,
And whose beautiful trust rae'er fail-
eth,
The grass is greenand. the flower,' are
bright,
• Though. the wintry storm prevaileth:
"letter to hdpe though the *suds hang
• low-, •
And to- keep the eyes still lifted ;
For the sweet blue sky will soon fleep
through.
Whew die ominous clouds are rifted
'There was never a night without a day,
Or an evening without a morning ; •
And. the darkest hour, as the proielb
goes,
Is the hour before the dawning.
There is many a gent in the path of life,
Which we pass in our idle pleasure,
That is -richer far than the jewelled crown.,
Or the miser's hoarded treasure.
It may be the love of a little child,
Or a mother's prayers to heaven,
Or only a beggar's grateful thanks
• For a cup ef water given.
Better to weave in the web of life
A bright and. golden filling.
And to do God's will with a teady heart,
And hands that are swift and. willing,
Then to snap the delicate, slender threads
Of our curious lives asunder,
And then blame heaven for the ta.ngled
ends,
And sit, and grieve, and wonder.

Strange 'Animals of Australia
Naturalists are perplexed in re-:
gard to the manner ia which the
quadrupeds in Australia differ so es-
sentially from those on. othetecanti-
nents. Pessibly they are remnant
rep' resentatia es of races belonging to
a primeval condioien of the earth be-
fore those more common came into
existence. • For example, the kanga-
roo is a wonder when its structure is
examined in detail. It has enorm-
,
011,a hind legs, which are mov-
e/ by muscular cordage of
such strength that it can
leap twenty feet at a' spring, and
in that way outrun a flet horse.
Its four legs are only- miniature
limbs, half -developed as it were.
Theaits fur Iinea pocket for .carry-
ing the young, alai a huge tail on.
- the ptineipte of a powerful spring,
by which it throws itself rapidly for-
ward, are singular deviations from
the normal grni of quadrupeds;
L'astly, it chews the cud. • -
Next among the animated anon)-
- alias of Australia is the ormithorync-
Juts paradoxus, the size of a rabbit,
with webbed feet, covered with fur,
haviag a bi1 like a duck and actual-
ly lay4 eggs. The accounts given of
its organie form were at :first ques-
tioned. Naturalists could not cred-
it such incongruities or. believe. a
quadruped could E.)ropagate its young,
as bit €l do, from the incubation of
eaas. Therefore, a.ncl without en-
ee
tering upon the peculiarities of oth-
• er animals of Australia, it is quite
possible in the rev'ol Lions to which
this globe has been subject, they are
true types of races that were not de-
stroyed when the fossil animals dis-
appeared from the earth,
