Respect and confidence manifested towards persons beget confidence for those for whom they are shown ; while brow -beating_ from stronger naturesinspires self distrust, which is -another name fear diffidence. A resoluteand persevering will to overcotr'e diffidence works in this, as; in almost everything else, power- fully. Self-confidence, self-reliance, can be cultivated. Our famous horticultural friend, Mr. C. J. Miller, of Niagara, 'when at our recent exhibition in Guelph, related to wi the history- of a pear tree avowing on bis farm near' Viregil. The tree is at least 100 years old, and at its base measures 10 feet -3 inches in circumference. but about 5 or sit years ago a large Earth, measur- ing some 20 inches through, was broken off in a storm, and the rent. made in .the trunk has been securely fastened by a strpng ox elhait . Mr. aYliller's predecessor -on the farm, some fifteen years ago, asserted that he had picked 100 bushels of pears off the tree, and sinee Mr. Miller - became prnptietor, he has repeatedly - in one year picked 20 barrels of good fruit, and the tree having grown to a gi eat height, some eight or ten barrels more have blown off' The tree is still in good bearing, was originally a seedling and H: good one, :is now grafted, and some of the 13 rt - lett pears grown thereon were ex- hibited ny Mr. Miller at Guelph. There is also another similar pear tire, but some ten years the junior of the other, and we understand is prolific with somewhat similar re- sults. —Guelph. e- suIts.—G'uell,h. 3fere'urg. GOODS ! The Chicago Tribune, in summing up the results of the year singe the fire, says : A -remarkable feature of the years' work, which is represented in this issue oft he Trtlncyce, is the univer- sality of the increase of business. It appears in every branch of trade, retail 'and wholesale. There is in- crease in commerce, increase in the number of buildings, increase in money invested, increase in.popula- tion, increase in wages, increase in receipts and shipments, increase in taxes, increase in everything. last someof our neighboring lived cities may be tempted to burn themselves sip in order to secure such advan- tages dvan gages of ,increase for themselves, it may be as well for them to consider that, while Chicago, as usual, has had to attend to her business as a great distributing centre for the rest of the country, she hits also been very busy restoring what was lost. This has been in addition to the regular business of t he year, so that the unparalleled volume of transact- tions does not afford tiny :special in- ducements to St. I.oilis, Milwaukee and Oincintlhti to h the an October Ninth, tneialy for the sake of in- creasing their husineeaa. • An Englishman and a German were traveling together in a diligence and both snmohi,rg. I regret to say that I have reason to, prow that the management of the late businesshad for some eears, in many wars, been most cor- rupt, and it may be that the Pills and Ointment a ere not prepared with the care I have always de - tilted. Those who do not wiali to be •deceived by buying spuriious, aedicines, which are now likely to 'oivauete from the States or elsewhere, to possess themselves of the goiiui{ie Holloway's Pills and Ointment, manufactured by me in London, Eng - will do well to see that each pot and box bears the British Government stamp, on which is engraved the words, " Holloway's Pills and Oint- ment, and that the address on the libel is 588, Oxford -street, London, where only they are mann- lectured, and in no other part of the world. The retail prices aro on the labels in British currency; and not in dollars and cents. No representative - of mine will .ever travel through auy part of the British Provinces or the United States, either to sell or to take Orders for my, Pills and Ointment, and as I have reason to believe that attempts will probably be made to deceive the public in this way by persons calling Rpm medicine vendors, falsely representing that they are acting for me and wit my knowledge and consent, I deem it advisable to put the public on their guard against any ench de- oeptions. I most earnestly entreat all thefts *rhe may read this advertisement that they be pleased, in the public interest, to communicate the purport of the same to their friends that they may be defrauded of their money by purchasing, perhaps, worthless invitations of the genuine Holloway's Pills Sud Ointment.
