NEW -YORK HORSE MARKET.
TUESDAY, Oct. S, 18 2.
transactions in busiuess horses of
every description were probably as large
as usual at this stage ofthe season, and
prices for ;sound animals ranging under
the category were steadily maintained,
but comparatively few sales of more
valuable stock were reported, and with
dealers in fine pleasure horses business
has been far from satisfactory. There;
can be hardly any doubt that the strin-
gency in money and the "prevailing in-
clement weather have both acted as a
temporary check upon trade- in pleasure
horses, yet the majority of dealers ascribe
the want of activity to the present ` po
Iitical excitement, stating as their ex-
perience that a Presidential election has
at all times had the effect of curtailing
considerably their fall trade. The sales
by auction were, as a rule, well attended.
by local and country buyers, and: the
bids obtained in most cases satisfactory.
The public auction marts were liberally
supphed with all kinds of coach horses,
which, having done' good service at
watering places and Summer resorts,
are now disposed of to' avoid the expense
of wintering them in the city.
-THE PORK PRosP>i:CT.—Some of they
leading Chicago packers are confident
that the coming winter packing season
-will be an iinusally active one, and opin-
ions are -expressed that the city alone
will pack 1,500,0W hogs during the
months of November,: December and
.Sanuary, or an average of nearly 100,000
hogs per week. One firm calculates to
-pack 350,000 hogs during the season. .

`York is quoted at 1121. ' -
