The Belfast Riots.
On Thursday of last week a fear-
ful riot_ commenced in Belfast. On
that day the Rornan Catholics were
.celebrating, by procession the Repeal
of the Party Pcocessions Act. This
.8o enraged the Orangemen. that a
number of them attacked the proces-
sion, when a general riot commenced.
The following particulars we glean
from telegraphic despatches: A
special despatch from London, dated
August 20th, says the riots in Bel-
fast continue with unabated fury,
and that the city, the most flourish-
ing in Ireland, is at the mercy of
the blood -thirsty mob. Mar tial la w
has been declared, fearing a repeti-
tion of the terrible scenes of 1866.
All places of business are closed. At
noon a regular panic prevailed, and
many respectable people have fled
fiann the city. eOrangemen in bodies
of 300 and 400, issue from `thetit
headquarters in Sandy Row and
rush through the principal streets
like demons, ftring in all direction.
It is apprehended that they will at-
tempt to demolish several Roman
Catholic institutiohs, and large rein-
forcements of constabulary have ac-
cordingly surrounded them to _resist
attack. Several regiments, includ-
ing detachments from the Royal bar -
reeks in Dublin were drawn up to-
day in High street, Donegal street,
and- in. the vicinity of Linenhall,
ready to charge the rioters: Dra-
goons and IJII0ttnued constabulary'
patrolled the city last night, • but the
shootirig was as brisk as ever, and
in many instances innocent victims
were killed. Bitter outcries are
made against the city authorities,
who, just as during the riots of 1866, ,
allowed the fiends to pelt the troops
with brickbats,. wreck churches, pil-
lage the stores aud perpetrate at-
rocious murder,, before they gave
the word of command. The Orange-
men are mostly favored, although
they have been chargek. The mode
of warfare is cowardly in the ex-
treme, and people walking quietly
along are shot down like dogs. At
this Wilting, the hospital in theat
Patrick street, is filled with wound -
and dying, and the screams of the
sufferers, as they are taken in, are
heartrending. Several women have
been shot. The troops can do no-
thing without' the sanction of the
Mayor, who, owing to the great .in -
(Reflation of the citizens, has at
length been compelled to order the
military to ngage with the rioters.
.A bout a dozen persons have been
shot at the so-called Boyne bridge,
near the railway station. The scene
since Thursday last has 6een ter-
rible. It Was at first" thought that
order would be restored- in a day
or two, but the partiality and bad
management of the authorities have.
led to the present dreadful state of
affairs. Many private houses have
been tern clown and burned. Work-
ed up to a fit of desperation the
Roman Cotholics- frorai the • district

the streets to resist the furious as-
saults ot the Orangemen, who for
