A Maid and. the Mangle.
The Dundee Advertiser says:—In
'the year 1872 it behooved the dom-
estic servants of Dundee to hold pub-
lic meetimgs to get their numerous
grievances righted. It was under
the agitation referred to that a ser -
Nam, and a member of the Maids'
Union, refused to carry the house-
hold clothes to a mangle or to raangle
them out of the house. " Never
mixd, my dear," said the cucumber
husband,- "we will soon cure the
Unionist. Just send our eldest girl
to the mangle with our own clothes,
and let her give the owner of the
mangle to understand that we are
not to pay for the mangling of the
servant's clothes, should she after-
wards take. them to the mangle."
This was a state of, matters which.
the -servant never salculated upon.
The following Sunday was her day
out, which was all the more awk
ward as she had an engagement on
that very day with a strapping pat-
tern maker, for whom she was setting
her " flag ; " and to meet her beloved
patternmaker with .an unniangled
petticoat was dreadful, and not to
meet him at all was out of the ques-
tion. The very thought of all this
was too much for the domestic hero-
ine, -who ended the strike by going
to her mistress and exclaiming,
Please, ma'am, I'll go the mangle,
aud the Society of Maids may go to
Auld Nick."

Texan Traits.
In a Texas town live two men
both named Charles F. Mason. One
is a dissipated fellow, always getting
into trouble and, disgracing himself
in -the most reckless manner. The
other is what is regarded down there
as an exemplary citizen and;i' prom-
inent member of an ev,ngelical
church. The piouta-}Masore natur-
ally much offended at the vicious
course of his namesake, for whose ir-
regularities he has frequently been
made responsible. After trying in
vain to induce the reprobate to quit
the town, he threatened to compel
the latter's departure, and soonafter
met 111E117 as the story goes, on a Sun-
day niOrning, while the church mem-
ber was on his way to divine service.
The meek and lowly Mason drew a
revolver and fired three shots at the
sinful Mason, wounding him serious-
ly, but not so seriously as to prevent
his putting two bullets into the up-
right Christian's arm ; creating, on
the whole, a very charming Sabbath
recreation.

The Fallen Virgin.
In a certain boarding school, a
few years since, - the scholars and
teachers were assembled for morning
prayers. The reading and singing
were over, and all were resuming
their seats, when one of the young
ladies, of very short and othick
ii
stature, missing her chair, seated
k
-herself with a " thud " on th floor,
Nobody smiled. All were oo de-
corus for that. The fallen ore, em-
barrassed into momentary loss of
common sense, retained her lowly
-seat, opened her prayer book and
appeared to be earnestly engaged in
examining its contents. This was
almost too niuch for her companions,
and a Smile began to struggle on
many a fair countenance, when the
the tutor rose and commenced read-
ing the first morning lesson. He
read from the 5th chapter of .Amos,
as. follows: "The virgin of Israel
has fallen ; she shall no more rise;
she is forsaken upon her land; there
" is none to raise her up." This was
too much ; the voice of the° rector
trembled as he looked up and saw
the fallen virgin, the scholars turned
.red in their faces, and the exercises
were brought to a hasty close.
'weather felt by c tiaOse who wear
flannel, and mothers especially
should endeavor to secure such for
their little pecple in .preference to
'showy outside trimming..
RAILWAY TIME TABLE.
Trains leave the Seaforth station as
follows :---
Saving Grace.
A clergyman was driving his gig,
in which' he was accompanied by his
daughter Grace. The gig came in
.contact with a large stone, and was
in danger of being- overturned. The
father, anxious for the safety of his
child, threw her out upon a plot.of
grass, and she escaped unhurt ; but
in attempting to jump out hinaself,
his great coat became entangled
with the wheel of the carriage, by
which he received considerable in-
jury. His friend, o'oserving . him
halt, 'asked him if he had met with
an accident. "I got myself severely
inj a -zed," said he, "by saving Grace."
"It is the first time," replied the
punster, "I ever heard of ' saving
grace 'hurting anybody, especially a
clergyman othe Church of Scot-
land."

Wearing Flannel.'
The majority of people are not
aware of the 'beneficial effects of
wearing flannel next to the body,
both in cold and in'waam weather.
Flannel is not so uncomfortable in
warm weather as prejudiced peeple?
believe. Frequent colds and con-
stanthacking coughs have been cured
by adopting flannel garments. There
Is no need of great bulk about the
waist, which condemns the wearing
of flannel with those who -prefer
wasp -waists to health ; for in that
case the flannel can be cut as loosely
fitting waists, always fastening at
the back. There are scarcely any of
the bad effects of sudden changes of

REAPERS & MOWERS.
WE WOULD CALL THE ATTENTION of the Farmers of the Connties of Huron and Perth
to our
Johnson Self -Rake Reaper, and
Cayuga Jr. Mower,
For the Season, of 1872.
We have introduced a few Into your Connties in years gone by, and would say we have made some
valuable improvements for the coining harvest. We received the
FIRST PRIZE ON THE JOHNSTON SELF -RAKE REAPER
/ At the Petsvincial Exhibition in the Fall of 1870.
The Johnston Machine was also Awarded the First Prize at Eingston in 1871.
Also, the First Prize at the Groat Reaper Trial at Paris in the Harvest of 1871.
THE OAYUGA JR. MOWER
Was awarded the First Prize at the Paris Trial. This Trial was held under the auspices of the Pro-
- vinoial Agricultural Society.
Wo can with all Confidence recommend these two machines to the public ; 'mowing that they cannot
be surpassed, if equalled, by any other two Machines made in Canada.
It is a source of ranch satisfaction to us to know thatmany competing Manufacturers concede .the
superiority of our machines, and are willing to give us the credit of using a better quality of material
and turning out a superior class of work, as regards accuracy of fitting, exactness of adjustment and
high degree of finish than is practiced by themselves. And while we appreciate the honorable senti-
ments which thus actuate them in giving an honest expression to their convictions, we cannot but re-
gret that there are others so lost to all sense of propriety as to forget the principles which actuate hon-
est and upright men in their dealings and intercourse with their fellows, and have, for the sake of
gaining popularity and notoriety, resorted to the dishonest practice of REPAINTM our machines,
covering the name, and entering them at Fairs and Trials as their own manufacture thus robbing us
of a reputation which we have Required by Years of honest, honorable and patient toil, and which to
us is of more value than any money consideration.
It is needless for us to Wall the farmers to beware of such parties, as their own good sense and
better judgment will teach them that there is no safety in dealing witb men who will descend. to such
low trickery, in order to gain a selfish and mercenary end.
