JOHN HORAN, ' M. HORAN, Jr., lop, April 24, 1572. Executors 229-x* j t1llt $, the Goat. It is not often that we hear of :any fain in Hancock County. The residents of that portion of the mor - Al vineyard, as included in the bound- aries of West Virginia, are not given. to much levity. When they do get a chance, however, they make all there is to be made out of it. They have had a _sensation at New 1 ,Cumbeiland, Thus runs the story : The Odd' Fellows' lodge room is situated over the town hall, or some ,other public place, and a man named Atkinson, deis}ing to hang a= chan- delier in the lower hall, instead of going to whoever had charge, of the key of the Lodge -room through the floor of which he desired to hang iiis chandelier, broke open the door-. Ile is a strong anti -Mason, anti -Odd Fellow,, and anti -everything else that is not in accord with his own shal- low and prejudiced ideas, so he did- n't think there was any harm in breaking open the door of such a sink of iniquity as he regarded the Lodge -room. There was not much to see when he got in, nor could h4. `find a suit- able place through which to bore the hole he desired to make. Look- ing round. he found a second door, that of an ante -room, in which the regaliia and paraphernalia of the Lodge were kept. Of course he kept that open, and there made his arrangements for suspending the chandelier in the room below. The affair created great excite- alient in New Cumberland, as will be readily imagined, and Atkinson was arrested for the offence. So much for the story. Now for the; fan. ° Some wag who strayed from some place where jokes were practiced .and enjoyed, got out a handbill re- citing the outrage, and setting forth - that, because of A.tkipsons's leaving the doors opened when he came out,, the goat had escaped, and offering a- -reward' -reward' for his recapture and return to a Brother of the Order, who was named in the handbill, The re- ward was so large as to tempt the• cupidity of all the boys in Hancock county, and no - goat now has a 'particle of comfort on her hills. No sooner does a goat show his head than the boys get after it and take it to the Odd Fellowalluded to for identification. So many he -goats, kids, and everything else of the great order of architecture have been offered that Bro. begins to think that the goat is a bore. He has told the boys that the; whole thing, is a fraud ; but they won't be- lieve. him, and day after day they waltz over the hills of Hancock county in a never ending, untiring search for the goat that got out of the Odd Fellows' Hall.—Wheeling. Register. • Life insurance - Well, I kept thinkin' over and ever ghat Cleve said, and what I'd promised that other feller, ,hardly catchin' a sleep o'wink all night, and the next day I started for Hartford. Jest before I'd got to the East Hartford meetin' house, a man. asked might he riche. I said sartinly, if he want in no hurry. So• he got in -and talked about tobacker crops, and chicken crops, anddfree bridge, and .accidents and et celery, and finally asked if my, life -was in- sured ; I saidit wasn't, and he took .out a lot of tracts and gave me one, and told all about how his company, insured againstlife and accidents, .and if I'd give him $25 (that's] more than I've ever got for writtn' letters). if any accident happened in a year, I'd 'get $25 a week, anci they'd fur- nish a doctor, saw up wood, milk the cows, and tend the baby. Well.' says I, ` supposin' I haven't got a baby, will you furnish one $' but he wouldn't agreetq that. We talked some time, until I finally told him that I'd take a policy,- but -hadn't any money, but if any accident hap- pened they might deduct 25 dollrh, when we - settled up. But he said he couldn't do it. ' Then why,' says I, cc are you like one of them police- men in Hartford i" He said he'd give it up. - '. Because,' says I, ' you dassent take me up.' Just then we'd got into the toll bridge, and it was so dark he couldn't see the joke. — Podunk Corns.- Hartford Times. •1: itu-3 d m C7 rn v 0, ■ 74f 0 -o V1 E Pluribus Onions !
